Discuss Project Runway

Not a good start.

What I liked: The new workroom. The diversity of the contestants. The new female judge.

What is I didn't like:

Bland host. Bland mentor. The male judge, trying way too hard to be funny.

The fashion: A good, not great runway. I think I'd have gone with the other top look for the win.

Now to the worst of the worst: O M G they didn't send that blue bodysuit home. I get the feeling that it was because she is nice and nobody likes the WASP princess. Another decision like that and I may not continue.

That did come out garbled didn’t it? Let’s see if I can express it better. Let’s say Tyler’s look is the worst. (arguably true) But the judges decide not to eliminate him, but to eliminate Shavi or Marquise because it would look like they were punishing Tyler for his comments and it would look bad to eliminate him. That would be unfair to Shavi or Marquise (whichever one they chose to eliminate) because they didn’t have the worst design.

They did decide to eliminate Tyler and we assume because his design was the worst. But some could claim they did it because of his comments. So the judge’s are damned if they do and damned if they don’t. A terrible position to be put in, because no matter how pure their judgement, someone is going to claim they made the choice for tainted reasons.

Poetist, Nancy is Nancy Volpe-Beringer, the designer who was in second place. (At least from how I read the judge’s comments. They all seemed to agree that Chelsey’s design, the all denim one, was not the winner.) Nancy designed the soft pink off-the-shoulder top and black skirt.

Okay, got it!

Now, I remember. I thought Nancy (really cute) and Chelsey's were too casual for the event, imo.

Oh boy, I have some strong feelings about this week's challenge. Apologies in advance if I offend anyone.

Punk and 80's post punk are my era. That was me. Firstly, I hate it when punk is talked about with high fashion. They are mutually exclusive. Punk is really anti high fashion. Punk was mostly over by the 80's anyway. At that point you had new wave and post punk. I can accept "inspired by punk."

As each look came down the runway I couldn't believe how bad they were. At one point I thought it might be the worst runway show they've ever had. I soon as I saw Melanie's I knew it was the loser but it had plenty of competition. Nothing inspired by punk in any of her team's looks.

At the critique my neck did an exorcist style whiplash. Did Sergio just tell Cindy Freaking Lauper to take a seat? Who does this bitch think he is? Oh and newsflash, Cindy is 40+ so that is NO excuse. No 40+ woman would wear that eyesore of a dress.

As for the winning team, they got off to a rough start. I agree with labcoat, Brittany's pink pantsuit looked like a business suit with a corset over it. NOT punk. The final three looks somewhat redeemed it. I would have put Nancy in the top along with Victoria and Geoffrey. I'm still not a fan of Victoria and she showed another version of the same look but it could be called inspired by punk.

The only really strong look imo was Geoffrey's so I am glad he won.

No need to apologize here.

My memory is kind of cloudy.

I didn't hear them stress punk so much as they emphasized -- 80s inspired fashion. Plus, they used Cyndi Lauper as their person for this challenge.

In my opinion, the Sex Pistols and the Ramones were punk. Cyndi Lauper was not punk. She was pop.

To me, the 80s were bold styles, bright and or fluorescent colors, tulle, oversized blouses, shoulder pads, leggings, buttons, safety pins, miniskirts, leather pants/skirts, and preppy blazers. It was an overabundance of things.

To me, punk is bordering on that grunge style and very basic. There is leather, denim, spiked hair, overuse of eyeliner, holes in jeans, torn T-shirts, and military-style boots. Unlike the bright colors of the 80s, punk was predominantly dark colors and most punk rockers used black leather with some embellishments.

As each look came down the runway I couldn't believe how bad they were. At one point I thought it might be the worst runway show they've ever had. I soon as I saw Melanie's I knew it was the loser but it had plenty of competition.

I agree.

Was it a dress? I thought it was a paintsuit. Oh well, it was an eyesore.

I was so Amen-ing that!

I would have put Nancy in the top

Really? That thing looked like something Vampira would wear, very funeral-home-ish.

I'm still not a fan of Victoria and she showed another version of the same look but it could be called inspired by punk.

I've always harped that Victoria has the same silhouette, but I think if it isn't broken. In this case, it wasn't, and I thought she should have won.

The only really strong look imo was Geoffrey's so I am glad he won.

I've seen his look before, so it was nothing new. However, I did like the cutout in the back.

The Bravo version of Project Runway is so much better than the Lifetime version. It's a breath of fresh air. Bravo put the focus back on fashion instead of product tie-ins, like designing outfits around flavors of Yoplait yogurt and Red Robin's bottomless fries. Lifetime's version had become a sad joke.

If this week's episode had been on Lifetime, the challenge would have been designing an outfit to cover up Cyndi's psoriasis.

Hi Poetist wave and everyone.

I haven't been posting because I can never remember all those people- who designed what, or even their names... and most times none of the designs are memorable to me, but I can and do remember Sergio (always remember those I do not like) hate his attitude, dude if you are that great why are you even on the show? "Millennial's can't afford my designs." I don't see who would want them.

He should have been eliminated for that attitude and that atrocious monstrosity.

Victoria? I liked her punk black dress but I could have sworn it was the exact same dress from last time with a piece of green material added.

Welcome ScorpionQ2. It will be nice having a fourth in this discussions.

As to this challenge; we would agree that Cindy Lauper is more pop than punk. That said, we think either could be the be basis for inspirational designs.

As for the designers, we think the right tops and bottoms where chosen. Geoffrey's was he best look and we were happy for his win. Victoria's was nice, but it was a repeat of her last episode silhouette. I hope she varies next time.

We like Nancy's look, but we don't think it was her best, nor a good as the top three, but we would place it 4th. Melanie's was bad; no terrible is a better word.

As for Sergio: his look was pretty terrible as well. We think it could have been edited down to a better look, but it would take a lot of editing.

We are wondering if this batch of designers are more obnoxious than some of the past groups. How many have challenged the judges? And not just a simple disagreement or defense of their look, but out and out arrogance. We will admit, sometimes we wonder what the judge's were smoking before the show; but that is a prerogative of the audience. As a contestant you should respect the judge's decisions, even if you don't agree. And accept the critique. You can use as much or as little of it as you like in later challenges, but don't throw into the teeth of the judges.

Sergio seems to think that because he's been in the business for a long time he obviously knows more than the people judging him. But they have been around for quite awhile as well.

We were concerned with Christian this week. He seems to be slipping back into his micro-managing days. We also found it amusing that he was so concerned about Chaos teams' designs; to the point of having them line up before they left for the runway and asking what was missing (or something to that effect). He seemed to think they were doomed, and they come up as the winning team.

Chaos did have some issues though. Nancy seemed to get pushed out to the edges of the group. It was hard to tell from the editing whether she was being obnoxious and non-cooperative or if the rest of the team were dismissing her for some reason. (Likely a combination of the two). Still, we think the group getting together outside to coordinate makeup looks and not calling for Nancy to join them was a snub. The excuse that it really wasn't a meeting, yet all of them were there except Nancy and they are planning strategy is ridiculous. That was a team meeting, and we can't blame Nancy for being upset about it.

Anyway, overall a great episode. As for this version vs. the bravo one, we are of two minds. We really miss Tim Gunn. We liked Heidi but we don't miss her as much. Brandon tries to much to be like Michael Kors (and we didn't like Kors). Elaine seems to be a thoughtful and fair judge. We don't always agree with her, but universal agreement is impossible. And Nina is Nina.

We do like the new workspace and runway.

Neither can I but I remember the garments that I like or don't like.

Yep.

No, it's all about the Chobani Flips.

This thing about challenging the judges is a new, but I must admit -- I'm here for the drama.

As a contestant you should respect the judge's decisions, even if you don't agree. And accept the critique. You can use as much or as little of it as you like in later challenges, but don't throw into the teeth of the judges.

I agree but this is TV. I think the producers know the personalities they picked to be on the show.

Yeah, I thought he turned over a new leaf up until this week. Not only did he lined up the designs, he was in Mood questioning fabric choices again, and he did it in the work room.

I noted the same thing about Christian, back to being a micromanager.

You all are right, Cindy Lauper is not punk. I think I get a little triggered when fashion types start talking punk. They don't get punk and and they never will.

Two of the three looks that were just safe should have been at the top; those were Nancy and Brittany. I don't know what the judges were thinking. Brittany and Nancy had better looks than Dayung and Victoria.

Chelsea's jacket was cool, and I was glad it won.

Karli Kloss on the whole Kushner dinner thing.

I loved this runway because it produced such a wide range of good and bad. Even the bad were mostly hot mess bad, so still fun.

I would put Nancy in the top instead of Victoria. I hated Victoria's look, way too much crotch hugging in the pant. I liked Daeyang's jacket but I think it would have been better paired with a loose legged Asian pant.

I agree with the winning and losing look. Chelsea's jacket was pretty much perfect.

All the bottom looks were terrible. Damn did I loved Nina's smackdown of Sergio. That said, his and Delvin's looks had a kernel of an idea whereas Shavi's had no inspiration at all. Why didn't he go with a silvery, slinky metallic like he initially thought?

Please invite that guest judge back.

I was hoping that the designers could have pushed themselves more, but I guess they should have given them two days to complete the task.

I didn't like Dayung's garment. It looked like a kimono, and even though I like Kimonos, it wasn't modern.

I know, right?! I thought the exact same thing. I thought I was going to see something like this, which is a modern Cotton Club dress w/o the beads and the costumey look.

Modern Cocktail Dress

Yeah, everyone wants the dreamboat back.
