Debat Broadchurch

I really like Broadchurch, the show which centers around a couple of police detectives in a small British town. I have some criticisms about the show which really apply to a majority of modern television shows and movies. I must use some show and I thought I would pick examples from a show I like very much.

I am watching season one again now. After the news stand man, Jack Marshall, committed suicide, the Rev. accosted Hardy at the funeral, blaming him for the man's death, saying "I told you he needed protection, and you did nothing".

I'm not sure what he expected the police department to do to prevent that suicide. The writers wanted to create tension and pressure on Alec Hardy so they had the Rev. and others put the blame on him for that death. That is pretty common stuff in TV and film these days. It would be nice to see the writers make the characters act a little more responsibly, a little more adult.

Who put out the word that the man had served time for sex with a minor? The press virtually convicted him and ridiculed him in print. Why didn't the Rev. and others blame them? Why didn't the Reverend try to protect Jack Marshall? The Reverend could have spent more time with Jack, counseling him, assessing him and trying to offer him resources.
Are the police responsible for regulating the speech of the community? Are they responsible for providing body guard services for people who might be at risk? Is the community willing to pay for those services?

The Reverend acted childishly, blaming DI Hardy for the suicide of Jack Marshall. Was that because he felt guilty over his own lack of action to assist him? Perhaps, but that puerile display of blame shifting is not what one would expect from a minister, a man meant to counsel others on the mature management of their emotions, as well as spiritual matters. Instead the writers made the Reverend an example of an emotionally unstable character. TV writers love to write characters who are emotionally labile, who seem unable to manage their own emotions or to behave as adults. I see this as a cheap trick. Sure, highly emotional displays grab our attention. But they need not be childish, irresponsible displays; it is possible for mature, responsible characters to express a lot of emotion. Sugary treats are nice every once in a while, but I don't want them as a steady diet. The banal, over-used trick of emotionally unstable characters can ruin shows.

When a man expressed his condolences to Beth Latimer in a parking lot after the death of her son, she nearly had a meltdown, with a shocked look on her face, before she turned and ran to get into her car. Beth looked almost like she was having a panic attack. Would a mother be very emotional after the death of her son? Yes, of course. But nearly every grieving mother I've ever met would have mustered up a "thank you, I have to go now" or something to that effect, even if overcome with grief.

DI Miller testified in court in season two and had a virtual meltdown on the stand. Remember that she is a seasoned detective, and knows the law very well. Detectives often must testify in court and are trained in measuring their answers and their emotions on the stand. They know the subject matter they must testify to, and department legal personnel have trained them so they know what to expect and how to respond.
But DI Miller seemed totally unprepared and on the brink of melting into jibbering tears.

Alec Hardy though is a ROCK! He can be a bit of an asshole at times, but it isn't gratuitous or for shock value. He doesn't mince words or hold back his opinions or his assessments. He is a responsible adult, mature, and straightforward. He doesn't shift blame, at all. He is at the opposite extreme from the majority of characters in television shows, some of whom are quivering jellied, weepy, basket cases. He feels emotions, the same as everyone else. But he is responsible and mature. I wish more television shows featured characters like more like Alec Hardy.

But I REALLY wish they didn't feature so many emotionally labile, blame-shifting, self-pitying, characters who far too often present themselves as victims.

(Broadchurch is really not so bad compared to most shows. As I said above, I like this show.)

I just found it and watched the preview on it. People whose memories are wiped are put on an island where they must learn to survive. Something like that. It might be interesting. It sounds similar to the Survivor type shows which pit people against each other. Do you know the kind of show I mean? Every so often one of them gets voted off the island. I don't like those shows, because of the voting off bit. But there is no indication of anything like that here.

I will give it a look pretty soon.

We used to have shows in Britain of the survivor type - this was before the sex and money brigade took over. It was simply two teams of five people - mixed gender - who would be taken to a pretty inhospitable place - like the Scottish mountains or some such - and they had to figure out how to make their own shelters and find their own food by foraging - how to get across a river - make their own rafts and stuff like that. I liked those shows - they were interesting and some of their ideas were really ingenious. The idea was taken over by the "cool" idiots and turned into a sex show. I have never watched "I'm a Celebrity - get me out of here" or Big Brother or any reality shows - I find them fake and money driven. I will have a look at this tonight maybe and see if it seems promising.

Sounds good. Let me know.

I have watched the first episode and it seems ok up to now. Ten people wash up on a tropical island with no knowledge of who they are. It has hints of Agatha Christie's "Ten Little Indians" (to be pc - original title was not Indians) and a mysterious number 39 keeps cropping up and a book called "The Mysterious Island" amongst a bunch of other stuff. There are personality clashes and a particularly silly incident when a woman cuts her foot and proceeds to go swimming in shark infested waters (as you do) . It has the feel of a video game - but so far I have no clue as to what will probably happen. It may appeal to your desire to guess what's going on !!

Sounds worth a go.

Did you ever see the series called "LOST"? It was a last minute idea for ABC channel at a time when they were in last place in the ratings and looking for shows. Someone pitched the idea and was given the green light with only a month to write the script. They thought it would be canceled right away, the execs, the writers, everyone. But it got viewers and gained a following and became a hit. I mention it because it has similarities. A plane crash put people on a deserted island where they must find a way to survive. There is a number found on something on the island, showing others had been there once. (It happens to be the same number one of the people used to win the lottery a couple years previously.) Anyway, there are people on an island and a strange number. So that's why I thought of it.

I will check it out.

I have just finished "I-Land" it's only about 7 episodes. It was OK but I felt it was - I don't know - maybe they could have done more with it - but that is probably just my over demanding nature !! I have heard of "Lost" although I haven't seen it - I seem to remember reading that the finale was disappointing and I am always wary of watching long series with poor endings - it's not on Netflix - I haven't checked out Amazon Prime yet. It's back to "Justified" for the time being !!

That was the problem with LOST. I read quotes from the writers; that first season they were sweating bullets to finish the next episode in time for shooting it. They scrambled with ideas and it affected continuity as the show went on. They thew in some weird stuff along the way and making it all fit together without leaving loose ends was probably tough because they had written themselves into corners beforehand, at least to some critics. I thought they did a fairly good job of trying to make it all fit, but the ending wasn't as powerful or exciting as people wanted it to be I guess.

It was the most innovative and original bit of writing I've seen though.

second comment:

I take that back about LOST being the most innovative writing I've seen. But I was impressed with it's original flavor in the first season. Probably that was the result of the writers not having the time to use their normal process. They had to go with whatever popped into their minds. When they have 6 to 12 months to map out the plot, which I read is normal, the plot has familiar tropes and patterns.

Anyway, I am starting I=Land now. The first thing I noticed was when the girl woke up on the beach she had a conch shell in her hand. When she looked around and saw no one she put the conch shell to her lips and blew it like a horn. HA. Yes, you can make a type of horn out of one of those, but you have to cut the end off to make a mouthpiece area like on a horn. They are not found like that in nature. (a moment later she sees another girl on the beach and goes to meet her, and it looks like the spine is still on the conch shell, so it couldn't blow that way.) So my first thought is, did someone put that thing in her hand while she was unconscious? Apparently, because someone gave that red haired, belligerent, unfriendly bitch a knife. I am 7 minutes into this show and I can tell that red haired girl is going to cause trouble. If I were there I would already be making a contingency plan to kill her, because it seems likely she will attempt to harm someone, and I wouldn't let it happen to me.

Well, I will write more as I watch it. I visit with a sister tonight for dinner. I will watch more when I get home.

third comment:

People are bitchy on this show. I guess it is designed for young people. Even when the two guys walked off with that original girl and one guy took his shirt off. They are on a tropical island, which would be hot, and the guy took off his shirt revealing his undershirt. The other guy got bitchy saying "Time for the gun show, what a surprise." And then he walked off, apparently pissed off that the guy showed his biceps. Shows designed for younger people have very immature characters. Perhaps the plot will show that they have been hypnotized such that they all display and act upon their most base and evil aspects of their characters, or something like that. A couple of the women ridicule just about every idea the others suggest for building shelter, signaling others, etc. One guy tried to rape a girl. I am still in the first episode so I don't know what else will happen, but these people don't act like normal people. I originally said I would have a contingency plan for the red haired girl, but if I were with that group of people, I would likely not trust most of them, given what I have seen so far. I would see if any of them had any sense and were trustworthy, and if not I would try to find a place for myself. It looks like the origianl girl is OK, and so far it seems a few of the others may be OK, but there are many unknowns. There are certainly some untrustworthy people there. To avoid having to hurt someone it would be best to avoid them. I cannot tolerate someone trying to hurt me. If I have to fight them I would rather only fight them once and be done with them. That will also put others on notice not to try the same thing. I would not operate under modern legal restraints or cultural norms. They are ridiculous.

There have always been people who cry foul if they lose, even though they were the aggressors. It happened with me a few times when I was a young fellow, and some other guy wanted to fight me. Once a much younger kid tried to hit me over the head with a large piece of icy snow. He was so young that I did nothing and let him try. I just stood there with my arms at my sides. He jumped up and hit me with the snow chunk which just broke apart without harming me. But the kid slipped when he landed and began to cry that I had hurt him. His brothers were there and saw the whole thing. They took his side, which just amazed me. I could understand that the little kid was being a cry baby. But his brothers were old enough to have some sense. They had seen the whole thing. I had literally not moved a muscle, but simply stood still. The kid wasn't even hurt, only his ego was bruised, and maybe his butt. He had tried to hurt me, but had hurt himself instead. And then he cried foul, he played the victim, and his brothers backed him. Finally one of the brothers approached me and asked me if I would just tell the kid I was sorry. I guess he knew I was in the right but wanted his brother to save face somehow. But I would not do that. That brother was hurting his younger brother by not making him face the facts. And I refused to go along with it.

The problem with the world today is that people like those brothers are in charge of things, they are running the justice system. If the bad guys get hurt in commission of a crime, or in a face off with the police, people insist that the police are in the wrong. If a victim fights back and hurts his attacker, people cry racism or some other phony charge. If you're in the right and you win the fight, people claim it is unfair. The criminals are in charge of the media and the justice system, or so it seems.

But on that island I wouldn't care about those norms, and if the others did, too bad. I would make sure I won. But I would try to avoid that by getting the good people to separate from those others.

Another parallel with LOST.

someone went looking for food and found a source of fresh water inland, and shelter as well. He tries to get those on the beach to agree to move inland where they have access to fresh water and shelter. (There were wild boars on the island and they had already had a run in with them one night.) So there was a debate among them about whether it was better to remain on the beach where they felt they might be spotted by a rescue plane or whether it was better to move to the water and shelter. In episode one of I-Land they have almost the same debate at their council meeting.

I don't know how far in you are so it is difficult to respond without spoilers and I wont do that. One thing I couldn't understand is why KC (the girl who had the knife originally) told a deliberate lie when the other girl was sitting talking to her on a rock. I think it is definitely aimed at teens - maybe that is what I find a little shallow about it. It should be a powerful story and yet somehow it just isn't. It's worth watching to the end but it's not outstanding. I think criminals seem to have the upper hand these days because the pc lobby is so loud that they are terrified of being sued for physical or emotional damage to them. The crims are very aware of this and know all the tricks they need to avoid long sentencing. In Britain - if you plead guilty - it's an automatic third off your sentence. It's all down to money. We have a political party here called The Liberal Democrats - they haven't won an election since the twenties or maybe earlier - they are firmly in the Remain corner of Brexit and their leader is a woman called Jo Swinson - she has put forward the idea that women should not go to prison for anything other than serious offences (men can though) because our prisons are overcrowded. It doesn't occur to the idiot to build more prisons. We release prisoners early because of the expense of keeping them incarcerated. Personally I would bring back capital punishment and make prison mean punishment - not sitting in cells all day taking drugs, smoking (which is banned in all other public buildings) and reading pornographic magazines. Bread and water and hard labour - they would be too weak and tired to riot in any prison I was in charge of !! You must have been bewildered regarding the snow incident - and you were right to stand your ground. That child was probably the spoilt baby of the family - used to getting his own way and pampered by the parents - the brothers probably did to you what they were trained to do in the house - give in to the little brat. There is a terribly tragic case happening here - a mixed race 11 month old baby boy was thrown off a bridge into a river by his father because he had a row with the mother. The child died. Just wait and see what cards they will pull out of the pack for him - racial - or mental illness or both. I doubt he will serve more than four years. There is a rumbling here though - people are getting fed up with discrimination against the indigenous population and a weak stance on crime and sentencing. They have actually admitted now - after denying it for years - that the rise in knife crime is directly linked to the cuts in the police forces. DUHHH.

I was hoping you two (or others) would weigh in on THIS

LOL, he has a good post and good comments and observations on the show. We have a good conversation started in that thread. Feel free to join in with your perspective on it. He is another Broadchurch fan.

Strange, I was looking at the IMDB page for The I-Land and it looks like episode 7 just aired 2 days ago. So this series is ongoing currently. Maybe it ends with this episode (which I am starting to watch now). But I wonder if they plan to continue this show.
