محادثة The Big Bang Theory

After complaints about the show's derogatory, offensive, or defamatory content towards people and cultures in the name of humour, thereby encouraging bigotry and misogyny, Warner Bros. and Netflix are considering to take 'appropriate action' - content moderation measures.

... Excerpts from Political analyst sues Netflix to take down Big Bang Theory; read to know:

Mithun Vijay Kumar, a political analyst has sued Netflix over the use of derogatory language against Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit Nene in the first episode of Big Bang Theory's second season, reporte The Times of India.

In his legal filing, he has asked for the removal of the show from the streaming platform, the report added. He accused the content of being sexist and promoting misogyny.

The controversy is about an episode that features actor Jim Parsons who plays the role of Sheldon Cooper in the sitcom. In the scene in question, Sheldon Cooper compares Aishwarya Rai Bachchan with Madhuri Dixit Nene. In doing so, he calls Aishwarya 'a poor man's Madhuri Dixit.' To which, actor Kunal Nayyar who plays the role of Rajesh Koothrapalli responds saying, 'Aishwarya Rai is a goddess, by comparison, Madhuri Dixit is a leprous prostitute.'

Mithun Vijay Kumar referred to the scene and said, "It is important to hold companies like Netflix accountable for their actions and to ensure that they are sensitive to the cultural values and sentiments of the communities they serve. I strongly believe that streaming service providers have a responsibility to carefully curate the content that they offer on their platforms. It is their duty to ensure that the material they present does not include derogatory, offensive, or defamatory content. I was deeply troubled by the use of a derogatory term in one of the shows on Netflix - Big Bang Theory. This term was used in reference to the acclaimed Madhuri Dixit Nene, and it was not only offensive and deeply hurtful but also showed a lack of regard for her dignity.”

Further elaborating his argument, he added, "I strongly believe that streaming service providers must take such issues seriously and act quickly to address any instances of offensive or defamatory content. Furthermore, streaming service providers should be proactive in preventing such content from being streamed. This can be achieved through clear guidelines and rigorous screening processes for all the content published. Ultimately, streaming services have a significant influence over the content that is consumed by millions of individuals, and with this influence comes a responsibility to ensure that the content they offer is respectful, inclusive, and free from harmful stereotypes. I hope that this incident will serve as a wake-up call to all streaming services providers to work towards creating a more equitable and respectful media landscape.”

... Excerpts from Days After Big Bang Theory's Madhuri Dixit Remark Notice, Netflix Asks Producers To Take Action:

As Mithun Vijay Kumar demanded that Netflix take down The Big Bang Theory, the OTT giant Netflix forwarded him to Warner Bros, the show's licensor, a few days later. On discussing the response with Hindustan Times, Kumar said that he anticipates the show's producer would take appropriate action.

When asked about Netflix's response, Mithun Vijay Kumar said, “As a sensible streaming service provider that understands cultural sensitivities, Netflix has informed the original producers of the show regarding the gravity of the issue raised by me. I hope Warner Bros will take appropriate content moderation measures and ensure that their content is free from such abusive language towards people and cultures.”

“As an individual, I believe that all such programs that use derogatory language in the name of humour must be taken down. We even have recent observations from an honourable high court on the need to regulate content with vulgar language on social media and OTT. While the Big Bang Theory episode may be one such issue, there are plenty of other shows where the content needs to be regulated. But I hope this incident has highlighted the need for content moderation on streaming platforms when foul language crosses a particular line. In our society, even today, swear words are not spoken in the presence of family, women, children, etc., then why is OTT an exception?” he further opined.

What are your thoughts on this, wonder2wonder?

Raj said some pretty derogatory things about India to begin with. He called it hot, smelly, and overcrowded. I think the only thing he liked about it was the cricket matches. But sure take down a show that's been off here for years.

Leave the original TBBT alone. If they want to, they can censor the sequel/reboot/next spinoff.

There was a young gentleman on the Imdb board from India who I considered a friend. I can't help but to wonder what he might have thought about this.

So why wait 15 years to complain? The episode first aired in September of 2008!

Nowadays any comedy is scrutinized for its content and censored if fun is made of people, their culture, religion, intelligence, sexuality, behaviour, and so on.

Many are offended by TBBT because of its perceived misogyny, bigotry, sexism, racism, anti-semitism, homophobia, depiction of autism, etc., and they were glad when it ended.

... Excerpt from The Big Bang Theory Needs to End:

Look, I know most people turn to television as a way to unwind and relax. People want to be able to turn their brains off and mindlessly enjoy some half hour comedy show. I really get that, and we all need mental breaks, so I don’t blame anyone for that. But, in my opinion (obviously), there are multiple comedy shows where the harmful and/or toxic content outweighs any potential enjoyment, that I can’t understand why anyone would willingly sit through an episode. The Big Bang Theory is one of the first examples that comes to mind when I think of incredibly harmful and mainstream pop culture.

To start a bit personally, I’m a Jew who watches a truly obnoxious amount of film and TV. Over the past decade or so, as I’ve become more aware of anti-semitism and Jewish representation, I’ve realized that there aren’t all that many canon Jewish characters in media. There are even less Jewish characters who receive more than a quick mention of their Jewishness, and/or who are actually portrayed by Jewish actors. While I’d normally praise a piece of media that has a Jewish character portrayed by a Jewish actor, Howard’s horrid characterization keeps me from even viewing that positively. As far as I know (as someone who tries to avoid the show as much as possible), Howard and his mother are the only two canon Jewish characters (and while both Mayim Bialik and Melissa Rauch are Jewish, Amy is never explicitly mentioned to be Jewish and Bernadette is explicitly not Jewish). Howard is undeniably Jewish, as he talks about keeping kosher (or his lack thereof), needing to find a nice Jewish girl to please his mom, and frequently using Yiddish words or phrases. We never see Howard’s mother and she’s constantly the butt of the joke. All the audience knows about her is that she’s fat (which is constantly brought up for mocking), loud, overbearing, and loves to guilt-trip her son. For those who are unaware, Howard’s mom checks pretty much every box on the list for the stereotypical Jewish mother, but then again, these traits aren’t contained to Jewish stereotypes. Although I wouldn’t exactly argue that Howard’s characterization is stereotypical, I find it repulsive that he is the pervert of the group; and I can’t find the right words to describe it, but I feel like he’s written in a way that ties his disgusting misogyny to his Jewishness (especially since the writers constantly and explicitly bring up his Jewishness). Almost every scene of Howard’s in the earlier seasons show him harassing or being invasive towards women. I know that these behaviors have lessened since Howard and Bernadette’s marriage; but most of his scenes with Bernadette are still dripping with his misogyny, as he expects her to take care of him and tends to treat her subserviently.

Obviously, the misogyny doesn’t stop with Howard’s uncomfortable behavior, though. All four of the guys are obsessed with attaining hegemonic masculinity. The narrative basically tells the audience that women only exist for men’s sexual/romantic attention or to be ridiculed. While Raj struggles to talk to women sober because of anxiety, he tends to harass women when he’s drunk, and in one scene, he even publicly exposes himself on a blind date. Raj is also overprotective of his slightly younger sister and tries to forbid her from entering a relationship with Leonard. Leonard is the show’s Nice Guy™, as he’s a “sweetheart” that never actively participates in such harassment; but he rarely appears to have an issue with his friends’ behavior and never tries to stop them. Leonard also seemingly thinks he deserves Penny, refuses to accept her repeated rejections, and after they get serious, even the show makes a joke about how he eventually “wore her down”. Sheldon, while an asshole to everyone, clearly has a gendered bias. He belittles women and often downplays their opinions or achievements (such as when he insists Amy’s work is inferior to his), and even in one episode, repeatedly assumes women’s anger (no matter how rightfully it’s felt) is due to a woman menstruating.

Not to stray too far from the original topic of this thread but...are you by chance my pal from IMDb?

He's got no grounds to sue here in The States. Last anyone checked, The First Amendment is still going strong, even if the culture of free speech is in sad shape

TBBT and other 'old' comedy shows have made fun of so many groups - people and their culture - including Santa Claus, the smurfs, AI, and also animals and insects, that almost anyone - who could feel offended - would sue, if that was possible. What can happen is that certain episodes will be edited or not be aired at all. Perhaps one day Chuck Lorre will follow in Marta Kauffman's footsteps and apologise. wink

Did she apologize for creating Friends?

We as a people need to stop being offended by every little thing! If you do not like a TV show or a movie DO NOT WATCH IT! There is plenty of benign crap out there for people that are easily offended.

Tmdb does not have a private message function does it?

Nope, not for the unwashed masses. But there is one for the mods.

Okay thanks! I knew there wasn't one originally and saw no evidence that that had changed but wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.

I'll be quiet now and let y'all get back on topic. 😁
