“Each year, various organizations try to sum up the previous 12 months with a single word or character.” (Babbel.com)
2021’s "Word"(s): of the year:
Merriam-Webster – Vaccine. --Runners-up in order:
Oxford Dictionaries — Vax
Dictionary.com — Allyship
Cambridge Dictionary — Perseverance
Collins Dictionary — NFT
The German Language Society— Wellenbrecher (“Breakwater”)
Australian National Dictionary Centre, Macquarie Dictionary: Strollout
Japan Kanji Aptitude Testing Foundation — 金 kin (“gold”)
I know "Omicron" was a late-bloomer last year; but, anyone surprised that it did not “overtake” any of these lists the same it did the world’s spotlight?

I appreciate the sentiment; but, that’s from “2020” not “2021”.

Considering the times, not surprising how many are
related. Anyway, here is a brief description of the different entities' word-picking-methods. I think Method 2 would be your word's best bet, followed closely by Method 5, and maybe Method 8 ...IF it could get pass that "shortlist" hurdle.
(1) Word’s search volume increased the most in a year.
(2) Creates a report collecting evidence for a word’s importance in a year.
(3) Factors include newsworthiness, lookups in the dictionary, and its connections to other work the entity is doing.
(4) A word that had a large uptick in searches over the past year.
(5) Rise in the use of the term throughout the year.
(6) They look at frequency, popularity and significance of the word over the past year.
(7) Have a committee that discusses the words and picks the one they think best represents the year.
(8) Creates a shortlist of words, and then lets people vote for the one they think suits the year best.
NOTE: The info is from babbel .com; but, I “massaged” it a bit for the sake of brevity.
