'Merriam-Webster'/'Dictionary.com' 2020’s Word Of The Year:

Pandemic: All things considered…no big surprise there.

Others in the running (in no particular order):

1) Antebellum

2) Asymptomatic

3) Defund

4) icon

5) Irrgardless (didn't know it was a real word)

6) Kraken (not sure if it's Leonard or Sheldon who would be over the moon about this one)

7) Malarkey

8) Mamba (didn't have a clue about this one)

9) Quarantine

10) Schadenfreude (didn't have a clue about this one either; sounds like some kind of dessert)

Anyway...

A. Anyone surprised about 'Pandemic'...would have guessed something else instead?

B. Did anyone else not know some of these words/terms? (This questions is not for members of the Grammar Police...we already know that you know all.)

ON ANOTHER NOTE:

Learned that the word "Coronavirus" is not a new one; been around since about 1920... astonished

Agreed- no surprise that pandemic is the word of the year. And #s 2, 3 and 9 don't surprise me either. The rest shouldn't be in contention.

Yes, many of the common colds we get are coronaviruses. This one is just new and meaner.

The acronym of the year should be WTF.

I can see #7 "Malarkey"getting lots of hits since is/was a campaign year; but, especially after the election.

5) Irrgardless

Shouldn't this adverb be spelled as 'Irr*e*gardless with an 'e'?

Kraken: Surely someone: Announcer/Ref/Coach will somehow find a way to slip "you know what" in somewhere!

But we shall see just how long the team stays. We haven't kept an NHL team around for very long in the past.

Caught my eye...all things considered...thought it deserved an honorable mention.
