As it is almost Halloween, it is time to let the skeletons out of our closets.
There was that less-than-stellar episode of TBBT where Sheldon (or was it Leonard?) had a box full of stuff in the living room closet including an unreturned movie and he felt guilty for it. He literally had kept a skeleton in his closet in the closet. (Or something like that. Doesn't matter. I'm really just using this TBBT reference which is a bit of a stretch to lead into this great new thread topic which I verified on "Was this discussed on the board before.com" and found it never has been so buckle up.)
Here is my skeleton: When I was a child (maybe around 10?) I considered stealing a Hello Kitty product from the lower level of the Belk department store. It was either a pencil or a pencil sharpener and I wanted it a great deal. I went so far as to put it in either my pocket or purse (the details are fuzzy), but then I put it back. I just couldn't do it. That was my brush with crime.
Now what have you done? C'mon. I know you made at least one prank call. Or rolled a house. Or something naughty. Your turn.

I believe what you're looking for is "etymology."

According to what I found on Wiki, it has been around since about 1816. But there is an image on that page that shows a 'skeleton coming out of a closet' in a caricature from 1792.

My next thread will be asking how many of you have Red Skelton in your closet.

Wouldn't that be a no from everyone considering he has been dead for 23 years?

Sheldon: "What does 'Red Skelton' have to do with 'skeletons in the closet'? Was he known for having or revealing personal secrets? Or was that sarcasm?"

One of these is not like the other.
Can you guess which one?

Sheldon: "The vowel 'e' is missing?"

I could also ask how many of you have Skeletor in your closet.

Sheldon: "That is better. Skeletor is a living skeleton with magical powers, while the other name has nothing to do with skeletons."

What about when Sheldon says he feels both complimented and insulted when people say that he reminds him of the skeleton character from "Nightmare Before Christmas?"

Jack Skellington. Wonder needs to supply the direct line.
