When I get a salad, I basically eat the toppings off (chicken, cheese, etc.) under a coat of ranch or bleu cheese dressing and maybe a leaf or two of lettuce if it gets caught in the tines of the fork during a chicken bite. So really, I might as well have just eaten ranch-covered chicken. But because it was on a bed of lettuce, I feel like I've eaten a health food. So my question is, does lettuce absolve us of the poor nutritional value of what we place atop it?

Also, are salads boring? There were few meal scenes where Leonard wasn't eating a salad. And Leonard was arguably the most boring character on the show. So was that a writing technique to say that Leonard was boring?

By something akin to the transitive property, if you eat chicken with ranch dressing off of Leonard does that absolve us of the sin of fatty eating?

What type of lettuce iceberg Bibb Boston some other kind of lettuce ? Just don't use Kale it's icky. Raj suggest avoid the ranch dressing and try a balsamic mango vinaigrette with poppy seeds and croutons.

Well, the type of lettuce does make some difference in one's eating pleasure, I suppose. Bib lettuce is somewhat pleasant. I generally avoid Romaine because it's tied to ebola it seems like every other week. My favorite lettuce is shredded iceberg. I think because in that form, and drenched with ranch dressing (or bleu cheese) it's as little like lettuce as possible and more like pleasant creamy dressing-covered crunchies.

Balsamic mango vinaigrette with poppy seeds just sounds like a fancy way to eat goat food. It's kind of like the old saying "You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig." By the same token, "You can put balsamic mango vinaigrette on salad but it's still goat food."

There must be a better use for kale than food. Perhaps as one of those grippers that help you open pickle jars?

This can't be the same Lemons that we knew and loved. She was an odd person but at least she was a grown up. This sounds like a question a fourteen year old would ask.

From the sound of it, you take a handful of iceberg lettuce and throw some chicken on top of it and then eat the chicken. And you call that a salad?

First, lettuce comes in a plethora of varieties: Iceberg, butter, frisee, mesclun, green leaf, Boston and many others. Then there are other green leafys: fresh spinach, dandelion greens, arugula, endive, bean sprouts and others. Check with your local farmers market.

Having chopped and mixed the greens, add in slivered carrots, green beans, tomatoes either chopped or cherry, slices of red pepper and whatever else your kids refuse to eat.

Now top that with the crunchies. Don't limit yourself to croutons, experiment. My favorite is a handful of mixed nuts.

Toss with oil and vinegar. If you must, add salad dressing . But that's it. Have the chicken on the side.

Kale is a tragic waste of photosynthesis! Freinds don't let freinds...

Don't worry, it's me. If I were an imposter my avatar would have a mustache drawn on it. And I ask questions for all ages. My next thread will be about the effect of lettuce on economics, politics and religion.

Mostly during that list of salad greens and toppings I wanted to run away and melt cheese on something, but I'll admit to liking arugula. At least in its case it tastes like someone sprinkled pepper on the garden weeds first.

Do you have any thoughts on my theory about Leonard? You know, because to show that Penny was exciting they showed her drinking all the time, and to show Sheldon was quirky they showed him eating spaghetti with hot dogs, and to show Raj was a spoiled rich fella they showed him eating Red Lobster in a diaper. So for Leonard, did they only show him eating salads to add to his persona as a dullard?

As a practicing omnivore, I can assure you that there are no "dull" foods, only dull palates. So you give me a choice of dressing like a baby, eating like a baby, being a drunk or being a grown up. I'll have to think about that. If Leonard is dull, I blame his mother. She systematically destroyed any spark of interest he might have had all in the interest of her studies. I'm just surprised Leonard didn't become a serial killer.

Well, let's turn this around to something more positive then for poor Leonard. (And I agree that growing up with his mother must have been difficult to say the least.) Leonard is the straight man of the show to everyone else's quirks and oddities, so eating healthy foods, specifically salads in most scenes, goes along with the image of being the least quirky/most normal guy. His normal salads make Sheldon's spaghetti and hot dogs seem even quirkier.

And I sat and thought about it for a bit. There are actually at least three different salads that I not only like, but they are specifically what I order when I go to these three restaurants and I eat the greens, too. Also, I love Greek salads. So much that I don't even need dressing with them because the feta is so good. And as you may remember, my favorite food of all is mushrooms, which is a vegetable (I think). I actually love cooked vegetables and all matter of fruits. It's just the raw vegetables where I am more specific about how I want them.

I hope I have redeemed myself to some extent. I'm also glad to learn (finally) that you enjoy eating something before your brownies, as well.

Also Tim, I've started some other new threads in case you'd like to chat in any of them.

The only serial killer is on the show is Sheldon because he's a serial killer of fun!

I've also heard that some people take a chicken Caesar salad and put it in the microwave and heat it up so everything gets melty. Why would they do that?

I can't imagine putting a salad in the microwave- yuck. Seems like that would wilt the lettuce. But I did have a really good Caesar salad once at a restaurant where in addition to the lettuce, shaved parmesan, chicken and Caesar dressing, they put some linguine on top that had been tossed in oil and spices and it was quite delicious.

Has anyone ever noticed the same lettuce and tomato are on someone’s plate every meal at the University every episode?

I have never noticed that! What if they're just plastic props? That would explain why we never saw anyone eating anything!

I believe they are plastic. They look the same in each episode.

Still practicing? When do you think you'll get it right? grinning

I only like crisp, crunchy lettuce that holds up. So I only use iceberg. Which means I can't ever (almost always) get salad in a restaurant, because they always use weird lettuce, then add spinach and other atrocities. I add sunflower seeds, SMALL croutons (those can be hard to find, in many stores all they have are big ones) and these days a tomato-vinegar-y dressing, usually a combination of two Italians, the "Roasted Red Pepper Italian" and/or "Sun-Dried Tomato Italian," both from Kraft. (A lot of stores don't have those either, but they might have several rows of Kraft "Zesty" Italian which to me pours like water.) In the past I loved Kraft "Miracle French" but they stopped making it, probably over 30 years ago now.

Rather than get full "heads" of lettuce and cut them up myself, I get the 3-pound bag of Garden Salad Mix from Smart and Final stores, for about $2.50-$3 which is a great deal. It includes some shredded carrot which I don't mind, and some red cabbage which I pick out because it's still easier and cheaper than cutting up lettuce myself.

Maybe he just hasn't been caught yet (he is a genius too, after all), and that's the next spin-off show...

A friend of mine in High School and college wouldn't eat mushrooms, he called them "sex organs of plants." I'm not sure if that was a reference to their appearance, or how they function in nature.

Eating poppy seeds could be risky for someone in a medical field, if you get random drug tests. Depending on how good the tests are.
