Debate The Big Bang Theory

Think about it all the women on the show are absolute ballbusting bitches. They constantly insult and belittle the men, emasculating them dozens of times every episode.

Bernadette constantly tells Howard that his hobby of magic is stupid and childish. (Try telling that to Penn and Teller or David Copperfield.).

Amy constantly belittles and insults Sheldon for liking model trains, comic books and science fiction.

Penny constantly belittles Leonard not only for his interests in comic books and science fiction but she even ridicules his job telling him that physics is "boring" and refusing to allow him to even talk about his work.

At no point is the difference in interests between the men and women treated as anything other than an excuse for the women to accuse the men of being childish and stupid.

The worst example if this is the episode where Sheldon is expected to give up seeing The Force Awakens on opening day because somehow Amy's birthday is more important. It is simply taken for granted by every character that this is the only decent thing for him to do, even though there are at least half a dozen different compromises that would allow both of them to get what they want, possible compromises that are never even discussed because the assumption is that what Amy wants is important but what Sheldon wants doesn't matter at all.

And cowardly men who are pushed around by domineering, emasculating women is a common theme in Chuck Lorre's comedies, for example, Alan and Charlie's mother on 'Two and. a Half Men", or frankly the mother of every male character on every show he has ever made.

Chuck Lorre clearly has a serious problem with women.

That was very nice of you to welcome the OP. I was thinking I hadn't seen him on this board either.

There are no escalators on the show. That is obviously one of its positive points.

The boys say things like "Schrodinger's Cat" to appear smart when they really are not. Also no one really likes them at Cal Tech. Or even pays much attention to them. For all we know they just sneak in there to have lunch and occupy vacant offices

Today you have finally exposed to the whole board why I watched this show to begin with. It was my safe space.

Well that pretty much covers all university positions. Howard was the only one of them that actually seemed to accomplish anything. That includes Amy. Bernadette makes drugs that may or may not work and Penney sells them.

I tried finding a quote of Leonards where he hopes that none of his research ever gets put to practical use. But I found this:

Remembered that. Enjoyed that.

Reminded me of an article where Neil deGrasse Tyson said that what's seen on this show is real science.

Well they were concerned about their gyroscope thing being used by the military. And there was a time when Leonard was talking about his laser research, and Penny - I think it was - asked him if it could be used as a weapon. And Leonard says "No. But the money's good!"

I couldn't find a video clip, but here: (It's from the episode where Leonard and Penny go on their "first date" again)

Leonard Hofstadter: Ah, let's see. I am an experimental physicist at Caltech. Most of my research is with high-powered lasers and, oh, I've just gotten a big government grant to see if they can be used to knock out incoming ballistic missiles.

Penny: Wow! Can they?

Leonard Hofstadter:Oh, God no! The money's pretty good. And I use the equipment to make my own Bat Signal.

Penny: Bat Signal? What are you, some kind of nerd?

Leonard Hofstadter: Not "some kind of nerd". I am the king of nerds!

Penny: What does that mean?

Leonard Hofstadter: Well, it means if anyone displeases me, I don't help them set up their printer.

There is more than one version of this floating around; but, I borrowed this one from someone in the comment section of this clip…AND TOTALLY AGREE with the sentiment.

Wow I really thought that was a printer icon with the lines representing sending and receiving. Because it followed Leonard's line: "I don't help them with their printer" Because on the big list of nerd cliches helping people set up their printers is right there at the top.

@znexyish You revealed my Schrödinger's surprise. It should've stayed in the box. angry

Mmmm Schrödidgers Surprise. It was a special treat brought out at family dinners. Inside was either a pot roast or a crumb cake. Of course we would never know because when we opened it it would always turn into a pizza.

More like scrag end or filet mignon, and then forgetting about dessert.

The women aren't "treated badly", but it is true that the show does tend to have the attitude that sex is the only possible reason for men and women to interact at all, hence the constant jokes from the others that Sheldon and Amy don't have sex, as if that is anyone's business but theirs.

If that was the case, why did three couples get married?

And if I may point out a few episodes that dispel your theory:

  1. The 43 Peculiarity: No sex, just Penny telling Leonard she loves him.
  2. The Tangible Affection Proof: we find out how Penny is romantic towards Leonard
  3. The Closet Reconfiguration: Bernadette comforts her husband when the letter from his father is discovered
  4. The Prom Equivalency: Sheldon and Amy say their ILY's.

Let's not forget about Raj with Lucy. No way would anyone ever pick up any kind of “sex is the only possible reason” vibe from that relationship.
