I have noticed that the lighting in some new shows is extremely dim. The two specific shows I'm referring to are Mindhunter and Ozark, both of which I've just started watching. I'm sure the dark lighting is, in part, to set the mood. But I wonder, too, if it's supposed to make the show appear somewhat slick, minimalist and trendy.
Well I don't like it! To watch these shows we have to turn up the brightness on the TV and turn out some of the lights in the room just to see what's going on. Kudos to TBBT characters for not sulking around in the dark!
What do you say about this low-lighting epidemic?

Hi Lemons
I finally found you gain.
The low lighting is to reduce costs. First by simply cutting down on the electric bill, but also they can cut down on the use of makeup. By following that trail they see that they don't need to have the actors on set for makeup and also fewer makeup people. It's all very Keynesian.

Hi Tim. Cost reasons had not crossed my mind, but that makes sense.

Low lighting is because people watch on their phones while keeping up with latest tweets. So no need to care if they see everything. Are you wearing sunglasses? That might explain things😎
On TBBT it wasn't even dark when Raj and Sheldon were in that tunnel for research.

I had not considered that as a reason either, but in this day and time many people probably are watching these shows on devices other than TVs. I guess I'm kind of archaic watching it on a TV, but it's just more convenient to watch it in my living room where I can keep an eye on my pterodactyl.
I'm currently not wearing sunglasses. Just earth glasses.
I like the lighting on TBBT. Leonard/Sheldon's living room is so bright and happy. I'd like to sit on their sofa and bask in the warm coziness.

They are just being cool. Lighting is for suckers.
Or is it "see'n stuff is fo suckas" That sounds more retro hip.

Maybe the next generation of shows will be filmed in total darkness with muffled voices. The audience will just have to make up the story for themselves.

Well, it worked for the end of Sopranos!

There was a trend a few years back called "dark dining" . There were restaurants where they turned off the lights and people ate in the dark. It's true and you can look it up! I also read about a glow in the dark restaurant. As Amy would say Ka-razy!

What was the point of said "dark dining"? Did you have to guess who you were eating with?

I just have this vision of an empty stage, totally black, a spotlight comes on lighting one character (say-Sheldon) "Bazinga" he says, and the spotlight goes out. Two other spotlights come on in different parts of the stage with two other characters. Raj: "If a vampire bites a zombie, what will happen?" Howard (in the other spotlight: "I don't know." The stage goes dark. And so it continues. Maybe they should all be wearing black. There could be a jazz background.

That one girl was overreacting too much for the camera.
Maybe we can go someday and then pretend we don't know who we're eating with. But the joke will be on everybody else because we actually will.

That sounds like a low budget hometown theater production. But if they sold craft beer in a trendy industrial-looking area in the lobby it would be a hit.

Sounds like "Our Town" only "Our Town After Dark" or in the dark.
