When Howard came down those steps dressed as “The Great Howdini” I laugh so hard I cried! The makeup along was worth the price of admission! And let's not forget that hair!! That was such a great—awful—routine. It reminded me of the Howard of old, before his character became so much of a 'straight-man'.
Also, I loved Tiny-Terror as “stage mom”--just ridiculous enough to make you .
As for the “watch trick”—I expected Howard to flub it; but, then I expected him to pull the “real watch” from elsewhere. Was anyone else caught-out when it turned out that Howdini was not so ‘Great’ and that man’s watch really had been trashed? (Was the 'man-in-the-audience’ anyone of note?—just asking?)

I seem to recall an earlier episode in the old Wolowitz home where Howie or Bernie open up an old box of magic tricks in the closet and feathers and dust flying out as if from a long gone dove. I too thought that the man in the audience might be someone known to the magic crowd but I don't really know. I also was not expecting a smashed watch

As I recall, That was when Howard was getting ready to do his magic show for his nephew's birthday party. ("The Shiny Trinket Maneuver")
And the watch thing just made me think "Well of course he's going to ruin the watch, just like Radar smashed Frank Burns' watch on MASH."

Figured him for a "Somebody" that somebody would recognize--seemed like a perfect
setup.

Well, Howard wasn't just performing for some random audience. That was the committee that at least initially checks out aspiring magicians for that club Howard wanted to join. So all those people were some kind of functionaries for the local "Chapter" at minimum. Whether the guy playing that part is actually part of some magicians "union" or something, in the real world, I have no idea. Doesn't really matter, either. At least not to me.
If they wanted someone recognizable, they could have tried to get Penn Jillette. They couldn't use Teller because he's already Amy's father.

Equally amusing to me was Howard presenting such a beginners magic trick to audition for this exclusive club
And then flubbing it

Yes there is that too. But I figure they do some "basic" stuff at first, to show that they can, and then move up to more advanced things like what Howard did to impress Teller\\\Amy's dad.
Except Howard didn't even get to "first base."

They probably thought his showmanship skills a little lacking as well. Better luck next time Howdini !

He should have brought along Bernadette in that little outfit made from one of his mother's bathing suits.

No surprise in that episode. Howard fails again.
The only magic that worked was his 'love spell' on Bernadette.
