Sheldon was angry when Tam did not move to California with him as promised. Although Sheldon took the anger too far, it can be very sad to lose a friend to a move. Have you ever had to move away from a friend, or has a friend ever moved away from you? How did it leave you feeling?

My best friend in the 8th grade moved away to another state two days before 9th grade started. (Parent's job was transferred.) My best friend in 11th grade moved away to Paris after that year. (Another parental job transfer.) My best friend in college and I ended up living different places after college. My best friend right after college moved away to another town 2 years into our friendship. (Another job transfer, this time her husband.) I've had other friends fade away. I keep my circle extremely small now as a result.

Although Sheldon should not have held a grudge against Tam, I will say that losing a best friend can cause a deep wound. Add that hurt to someone with a personality like Sheldon's and there is definitely the probability for some extra deep hurt and an irrational response. Also, we know that Sheldon's childhood wasn't easy and that Tam was really his only friend, so Sheldon was probably extra clingy.

Edit: I have re-read this OP and it kind of sucks. Really I just wanted people to tell their own stories. I'm not trying to defend Sheldon! I promise!

The biggest thing that Sheldon didn't take into account - and which you seem to overlook too - is that it was SHELDON who actually moved/left. He expected - perhaps more in his own head than had actually been promised- Tam to come along, but that's not the same thing. He could just as easily have expected Mom, Dad, Georgie, and Missy to move to California too, just because he wanted/expected it. And that would have been just as wrong.

I beg to differ. From watching Young Sheldon his childhood while not easy was nothing like he has described it on TBBT. He had a cool supporting family, Meemaw, interested teachers at school, even the kid next door is pretty nice. I like the show Young Sheldon but not the character Young Sheldon or Jim Parsons cheesy narration. Old Sheldon doesn't know how good Young Sheldon had it. I like Tam in YS and was curious how he might be brought into TBBT. Alas Tam got a poor treatment and lame storyline from the writing staff.

I think everyone might have misinterpreted my OP but perhaps that's my fault. Really I just wanted to know if anyone ever had a friend move away from them, or if they had to move away from a friend. I was coming at it from both angles and I'm not defending Sheldon.

It would have been helpful to see that conversation between Tam and Sheldon. Sheldon's reaction was still wrong- don't misunderstand me. It would be interesting to know, though, if a promise was really made. I think people need to choose their words carefully with Sheldon because he will count on people to keep promises and will fixate on the words they used. He's very much for following the rules and I think that extends to kept promises.

I've stopped watching Young Sheldon so I'm not particularly invested in Tam. It does annoy me some that there is a disconnect between grown-up Sheldon's accounts of his childhood and the account shown on Young Sheldon. Especially since grown-up Sheldon is narrating it.

Going of track is common here. I myself have never had the good friend moving away experience. Also what kind of angles are you coming from: right, straight, acute, or obtuse ? triangular_ruler So lets get this lemon train back on track. train2

I'm glad you've never been left by a friend. It is sad. I'm probably particularly sensitive to it since it has happened to me multiple times.

I've always been a fan of the word obtuse. I also felt very grown-up when I got to use a protractor in the fourth grade.

Do you like the edit I made to my OP? I figured I better clarify so people don't come after me with pitchforks and torches.

I guess so. We all have Sheldon on the brain now because of this dumb episode. Now wouldn't have Sheldon left Tam when he went to Switzerland or wherever he went? I have to not take this nonsense seriously. We are too lazy to go after you with toothpicks and glow sticks. I also like the word obtuse as well as the three types of triangles: isosceles, scalene, and equilateral.

Isn't most/all of the awful childhood that grown-up Sheldon describes, AFTER his father died? The Young Sheldon show has a ways to go yet, before that's supposed to happen. And it very likely won't be on the air that long anyway. Unless they jump ahead.

Well, I'll try not to pitch a conniption fit if you ever decide to move away from me to a far away message board land in search of acute lady named Scalene with lovely equilateral, uh...eyes. That would be obtuse of me. Just don't go serenading her with Alan O'Day's hit Undercover Angle, because that's my song.

Also, I tried really hard to find something clever to say with the word isosceles, but I failed.

When Sheldon leaves, that's just fine, because it's all for the universal good that is Sheldon. And he turns it around anyway, like he did in this episode: If Tam doesn't come with him to Switzerland, that's Tam leaving HIM.

Knixon you just buried the response I wrote to Znex that took me at least 10 minutes. Actually with distractions it took me 20 minutes. When I post extremely important things with italicized words in them you must count to at least 4,597 before burying them.

Znex, read up there. arrow_up

How about "I came, Isosceles, I conquered?"

Well, that's good, but how does it fit into the rest of what I was saying to Znex?

Hey I just came up with the clever usage, you have to figure out how to make it fit. grinning
