Beyond looks, she's intelligent , driven, made tough political decisions, and didn't need a love interest to help accomplish her goal. If there's any character parents would be comfortable with their young daughters looking up to it would be her.
She also had the best and most memorable solo song out of all the previous Disney princesses.

For the sake of comparison (and since I'll probably never watch the movie), to which "Moana" song are you referring?
In the meantime--my all time favorite is Pocahontas | Colors of the Wind | .

Listen to "How Far I'll Go " sung by Auli'i Cravahlo.

Just remember that Bernie gets to be Cinderella. You got a problem with that and she'll turn the car around right now !

How is Merida from "Brave" not better?

I'm going with Jasmine because Alladin is still my favorite Disney film.

But it's not just about pretty, it's supposed to be about strong and stuff, too. Was Jasmine all that strong, independent, etc? Compared to the others?

Well then how about Rapunzel from "Tangled". She has all the points mentioned and the hair.

Rapunzel doesn't seem like such a strong, independent woman compared to others.

Well Rapunzel was the first Disney computer generated princess if that counts for anything.
Brave was Pixar but I can't think of other Pixar Princesses.
A problem I have with the Disney Princessses is that the Princes are rather a boring lot except for the Beast until he changed to a Prince himself
Live action princesses" "Enchanted" and "Ella Enchanted"
And lets not forget Princess Fiona from Shrek (Dreamworks)

Brave was technologically produced by Pixar but somehow was still a Disney production and released by Disney. That's how I read it, anyway. Maybe it's like how Star Trek: The Next Generation was a Paramount production even though Lucasfilm (Industrial Light And Magic) did a lot of the work.
But the original point was that Moana was supposed to be the most self-reliant, etc. Rapunzel basically just had magic. Most of the others people have been coming up with, don't seem to fit either.

Lets just way that I am not the person to discuss the relative merits of Disney Princesses with.
Does Amy count ? She does have a tiara.

There are a lot of great Disney princesses but I feel Moana is the best in terms of being a feminist icon. She was the leader of her people, bravely ventured into the unknown to save them, and most of all did it without the help of any love interest.
Mulan had Shang, Jasmine had Alladin, Moana had Maui , but SHE saved him and they never teased any romance which isn't typically Disney's formula.

Thanks.
Listened.
Yes. It's a nice song; but, unlike "Colors of the Wind" it's not something I'd stop and listen to over and over if I heard it outside the movie.
