Was grownup George anything like what you’d expect from watching young George?
I’ve only seen one episode of the show; but, based on what Sheldon has said over the years, I expected the older version to be “Zack” dense, and a lot more selfish and uninvolved.
No way would I have ever expected him to be someone who would run interference for Sheldon and step-up as the man-of-the-house.
Was anyone else surprised?

Pretty much.

Well, Sheldon thinks anyone who isn't as smart as he is, to be basically dumb as soup. Although Penny and others outsmart him on a regular basis. So it wouldn't really make sense to accept Sheldon's description of someone else's intelligence.

The only character from YS who I find significant different in the one time we've met her on TBBT is MeeMaw. I realize that she was there partly to bag on Amy for having broken Shelly's heart once before, but she really didn't seem like a maturation of Annie Potts' character.

But since MeeMaw on BBT was shown first, if anything they should have modeled the YS character on HER.
MeeMaw on YS does seem a bit on the vindictive side though, with examples such as the brisket recipe. So they might not be all that different, really.

Fans hated MeeMaw as was--I can see them not wanting to resurrect a younger version of that dead horse.

After I asked the question I saw a promo comparing the two. Have to admit; now that I think about it, looks-wise the casting call probably went out for an older version of the younger actor. It would just make sense.
As for personality-wise, I’m glad that “future” George didn’t disappoint. No doubt, O'Connell did his homework.

Have to agree--even in the little I've seen of her; she is much more welcoming than the older version. Of course, right now, no one is trying to "steal" her Moon Pie!
