I've been watching Criminal Minds for years and the more I watch the more I recognize how good Matthew Gray Gubler is.
On CM he plays an genius FBI profiler with a 187 IQ . The character graduated HS at 12, and has PHDs in multiple sciences. He has an eidetic memory that allows him to recount things he's read or studied with an alarming amount of detail. He has trouble reading social cues ;can't really understand sarcasm or irony. He's also physically similar to Sheldon In that they're both lanky and tall.
It amazes me how many similarities there are between these two characters, and yes there are also obvious differences .
He's the only actor in Hollywood that I think could have pulled off the Sheldon character if Jim was never casted.

I think Leonard, Howard and Raj would stand no chance, while the girls, especially Penny, would be all over Matthew Gray Gubler (as Sheldon).

I think Kaley would be dragging him to the alter as soon as she found out he was single.

He looks too "cut above". Parsons (especially when he was much thinner--as when the show started) has/had a certain quirkiness about his appearance. That's one of the things I like about Team Chucky--not one to lean too much toward "cover-types" when it comes to casting. Generally, it's folks that look like you and me and the people sitting next to you and me.
My choice would be Stephen Merchant who played "Dave"--a guy who dated Amy's and worshiped Sheldon.
