Congratulations to two personal favorites:
Best Actress: Frances McDormand
Best Supporting Actor: Sam Rockwell
I hate award shows; would never watch one; but, always happy when someone I like wins.
Also a belated to Laura Metcalf for her Best Supporting Actress Nomination.

I won a couple of tickets to an Oscar viewing party at a local cinema. I went mainly for the included dinner (I had the salmon in the fish or chicken choice) but stayed until the memorial roll and when the theatre became too cold to stand anymore. The ceremony was as usual the mix of bad jokes, self indulgence, political stands, too long song numbers done to unmemorable songs and well more of the same. I did not see all the nominations but the ones I did were at best mediocre. The bit where Jimmy Kimmel went to the theatre across the street was a horrible "lets look at how the little people live" moment. The theatre also had movie themed cocktails. I had a "The Shape of Water" drink which was just a "Dark and Stormy" and quite delicious.

Sam Rockwell is so insanely underrated it's a crime, glad he finally got an Oscar. I don't know much about FM but I was super happy to see ALISON freakin JANEY win an Oscar.
How many network sitcom actors can say they're Oscar winners?

I know AJ from a turn she did on “In Plain Sight”. She only did a couple of episodes; yet fans of the show were all-in-an-uproar when she left. Quite an impact!

AJ's signature role for me is C.J. Kregg in THE WEST WING.
As for the Oscars - I saw the last 30 minutes. We used to make a big deal of it - mainly because I am a huge movie fan. However, these current Hollywood hypocrites bug the living piss out of me. I don't need to see a guy like Jimmy Kimmel lecturing me on #Metoo - when he got his career catapulted by hosting "THE MAN SHOW" - which serially was essentially about men drinking beer and ogling women. Then to watch idiots pass by to 'punish' Ryan Seacrest - a man accussed but investigated TWICE and cleared of harassment - but then stand and CHEER Koby Bryant - a guy accused, charged and who was being PROSECUTED for RAPE - but got out of it by paying off the victim so she stopped cooperating with the D.A.. The same people who sucked up to Woody Allen for years, and had petitions and fundraisers for ADMITTED and CONVICTED CHILD RAPIST Roman Polanski. It's hard to find a group of people who are more self righteous and despicable than the group in Washington DC, but Hollywood is up to the task. Oh - lest I also get lectured by people surrounded by armed guards, and who GLORIFY violence and guns - but then think I shouldn't be allowed to have one.
The show is less about movies each year, and more about politics and preaching. Thanks for wrecking the evening Hollywood.
What used to be a night of fun has turned into the Grand Finale of an Awards SEASON. I've never seen another industry that spends so much time telling themselves and the public how great they are.

Especially how BRAVE they are. "Speaking truth to power," etc. (As long as it's not one of THEIR OWN powers, such as Harvey Weinstein or Bill Clinton.) And they think it's important to picket the Syrian embassy in DC or something. Great. They're so brave because the US is now the Gulag Archipelago or something. Whenever there's not a Democrat in the White House, I guess. Sure. Let them go picket IN SYRIA and see how long they survive.

All that self-important posturing is one of the reasons I never watch award shows. Also, let’s not forget that these people ARE ‘actors’—and that whenever/wherever there is a camera rolling they are on.
Deep down, I don’t think any of it has ever been any more real than it is now—we are just old enough and better connected enough to know better.
I think we just have to embrace the art--even as we damn the artist. After all, it is not as if we have to bring any of them home. (That woman and Ansari, notwithstanding.)

Great point on Kobe, like but remember, a lot of people, probably the majority, thought he was innocent. He never became persona non grata after that hotel story.

A lot of people thought OJ Simpson was innocent too.
It's just the hypocrisy that bugs me. They blow off Seacrest and treat him like a pariah, but applaud Bryant. If you're gonna lecture me Hollywood - at least be consistent in your outrage. This selective outrage bugs me beyond words.

Bottom line, I expect a lot of people believe(d) OJ was innocent for the same reason they'd believe Bryant was: because if they thought/said he did it, they'd be called racist. Many people will go to great - even ridiculous - lengths to avoid that.

I understand why it's hypocritical but it's the Halo effect at work. Kobe is a sports hero to a lot of people so he's seen in good light. People tend to dislike Seacrest because he's so Hollywood and artificial. They aren't going to be treated the same.

Lest not forget that timing was on Bryant’s side. Until the #MeToo volcano erupted, along with sports heroes there were some other “Teflon” groups. The ones that come to mind are celebrities, folks with a family-name, and big $$$-folks.
And since, as far as I know, there was no mad dash of women to their lawyer's office to accused Bryant of similar behavior, I'm torn. (There was an ugly scandal here a few years ago involving members of the athletic program of a prestigious university. Had one of the athlete involved not surreptitiously recorded some of what happened on his cell; all of them would have, no doubt, received jail time. And, considering the seriousness of the charges—probably would still be in jail.)
Not downplaying anything that happened in the Bryant case/not defending him—just saying that “reasonable doubt” shouldn’t automatically be discounted just because of the nature of the accusation.

Meaning, the recordings proved the allegations were false?

One of the best mostly-unforeseen side effects of people recording "everything" was not - as seemed to be most expected - catching people (including/especially law enforcement) "red-handed," but proving that allegations/accusations were false. (Often including against law enforcement.) And if we're moving into a time when all accusations tend to be believed, then having recordings is turning into a necessary means of self-defense.
That's a twist on things like "1984" that I bet most people didn't expect.
