I know I'm SUPER late on this but many Februarys have past and we've never had a Black history month music thread.

Post your favorite songs by Black artists classic or current.

This song won the Grammy for best Rap performance by a group or duo at the 36th Grammy awards:

"The Impossible Dream" -- Brian Stokes Mitchell

(Saw him in my first Broadway show EVER...been a fan every since.)

One from yesterday and one from today

Ooh Child - The Five Stairsteps

Lost Boy - Ruth B

Here's one I'll introduce with a quote from The West Wing. It's about Voyager One - the Earth probe that was launched in 1977. It STILL sends data back to NASA (for about 2-3 more years) and is now over 13 billion miles away. Theoretically it will travel the stars forever, provided it doesn't collide with something - which - believe it or not - is highly unlikely. It's probably more likely that it will be intercepted by some other form of life. Although it's power will finally shut down between 2025-2030, it's trajectory will continue. On board VOYAGER ONE is the famous GOLDEN RECORD - filled with audio and video data in case intelligent life ever finds it. And although this is history, here's how it ties into "Black History Month Music Thread" - and here's the quote...

"Voyager, in case it's ever encountered by extra-terrestrials is carrying photos of life on Earth, greetings in 55 languages, and a collection of music from Gregorian chants to Chuck Berry. Including "Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground" by '20s bluesman Blind Willie Johnson, whose stepmother blinded him when he was seven by throwing lye in his eyes after his father had beat her for being with another man. He died penniless of pneumonia after sleeping bundled in wet newspapers in the ruins of his house that burned down. But his music just left the solar system."

So, since Blind Willie Johnson - a black musician - is one of our ambassadors to space - and may be heard someday - as a part of our history - and it could be billions of years from today - here's the song that may greet that extra-terrestrial life in millions/billions of years.

Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground - Blind Willie Johnson

Inspired by the BBT episode about the space probe:

Alien 1: "Let's go find them!"

Alien 2: "Yes, they sound delicious!"

As Howard said in "The Plimpton Stimulation "

"What the Frack ?"

You don't remember the end of the space probe episode?

S08E21 - "The Communication Deterioration"

Scene: An alien spacecraft.

Sheldon (on screen): Greetings from planet Earth. Just turn left at Alpha Centauri. You can’t miss it.

First Alien: That soft pink alien looks delicious.

Second Alien: I could eat.

I do. I'm still confused. Sometimes Knixon you make my brain hurt.
