We did this one back on IMDB - so I thought with the New Year, we could do this as a new thread here on TMDB.

I'll start with one from the man I've seen live more than any other act, John Mellencamp.

This is "Minutes to Memories", one of my favorites from JCM. Here's some of the ending lyrics that spoke to a generation back in 1985, and still speak to new generations today.

The old man had a vision but it was hard for me to follow
I do things my way and I pay a high price
When I think back on the old man and the bus ride
Now that I'm older I can see he was right

Another hot one out on highway eleven
This is my life It's what I've chosen to do
There's no free rides, no one said it'd be easy
The old man told me this my son i'm telling it to you

Days turn to minutes and minutes to memories
Life sweeps away the dreams that we have planned
You are young and you are the future
So suck it up and tough it out and be the best you can

32 years of my days have become memories since I first heard this tune, and I still love it.

Enjoy! And share some tunes from acts you've seen live!

Here's one from a lesser known band. WANG CHUNG did the soundtrack for a HIGHLY under-rated film, TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A.

Here's the title track. This film is a hidden gem of the 1980's, and the soundtrack is as much a character in the film as any of the talented actors. It's probably one of my most played soundtracks. I actually saw WANG CHUNG as an opening act prior to this music being developed. For that I'm bummed.

TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A. - Wang Chung

Incidentally, one of the main actresses in the film died just last week. Her name was Darlanne Fleugel. She was beautiful. And the sad thing is, she died at the young age of 64 - of Alzheimer's. So sad to have that disease cut her down so early.

For today, I'll pick a tune from a group I'd love to see again, HEART.

This is one of my favorite tunes from them.

Straight On - Heart

Here's my favorite one that is sung by Nancy Wilson. Ann does most of the singing, while Nancy is on guitar. Most people don't even know this is Nancy.

There's the Girl - Heart

Here's one from a very underrated musician. He is WAY talented. This is actually a live version of the tune.
In concert, he's amazing.

Look Out Any Window - Bruce Hornsby and The Range

A select group of Australian bands hit big in the eighties. This is not one of them. But this guitar based band did have some small success.

Bittersweet - Hoodoo Gurus

I Want You Back - Hoodoo Gurus

Years ago, I saw Veruca Salt open for Hole, Courtney Love's band. Not long after, I think the lineup got reversed.

Here's a tune from the worst concert I ever attended. The band THE CARS. Boring - dull - un-enthused to describe THE CARS would be an insult to boring and dull bands.

It was hard to fathom. They have such a great catalog of material. But in concert? They walked out - stood their like cardboard cutouts, played their set, and walked off. I've never seen a more robotic delivery of material in my life. And I've read other show reviews. It wasn't isolated to our show. They CLEARLY hate touring. At our show at Pine Knob - it was at the height of their popularity. They were booed off the stage after the show. Actually, they were booed several times during the set.

Still, they are a really good band with a great catalog of music.

Here's a Demo version of "It's All I Can Do". I actually like it better than the final version. It's more raw and has more feeling to it, imo.

Thanks.

Taken aback a bit when I first read the match-up.

Seemed such an odd duo - just had to watch!

Thanks.

A collection of songs from other acts I've seen live (that I'm willing to admit to):

Rosalina's Eyes- Billy Joel

Mama Can't Buy You Love- Elton John

Love Reign O'er Me- The Who

Spirit of the Radio- Rush

Anastasia- Slash

Mama Kin- Aerosmith

I Love Rock and Roll- Joan Jett

Carefree Highway- Gordon Lightfoot

Steamer- Jimmy Buffett

I'm on Fire- Bruce Springsteen

Ebony Eyes- Stevie Wonder - Best concert I ever attended! No contest.

Saw "Wonder" in concert - enjoyed it immensely!

My companion, however, a music aficionado, was a little triumph (well actually, a lot) about paying top $$$ for live when some of the songs were obviously (to him, anyway) prerecorded.

I didn’t/don’t have “an ear” for such; so, couldn’t tell the difference. Kind of reminds me of all that brouhaha over “Whitney Houston” and the National Anthem. Until, the story broke, how many of us knew?!

I'm pretty sure what I saw was the "real deal". In part because he messed up the lyrics on one song and then apologized for it later tongue , and he also played several songs on an old stand-up piano. Granted, I'm naïve, but I think this time was the real thing!

As many of you know from both here and IMDB - I am a big lover of music. And sports. One thing about being my age is, most of the people I know are either the same age, or younger (i'm in my early 50's). However, there was one friend who's 64. He's a musician. He's someone I love to bounce ideas off of, be it about music, sports, politics - and TV shows. And I love his experience and life perspective. I met him on a local chat, not unlike IMDB and this board. Great guy. We go to lunch, and some ballgames. It's just rare to get that 'experienced' perspective the older you get. At least in my case because it's harder to meet new friends who are older than you, when most people you now meet are younger.

Yesterday he died - suddenly. I've been thinking about how music and sports will have a huge hole in it for me going forward. I wish I'd spent more time with him while I could have. I've had people die in my life. I've watched people die. When you get to be this age, death shouldn't shock you like this one did. But this one has. Today - music isn't as joyful as it was yesterday, and the day before. Neither is sports. They will be again. But it will be different.

Just thought I'd set this tune up with some context for today. Funny thing is, though this is one of my favorite artists (I've already posted a tune here by him), he didn't really care for JCM. But we'd have had a good discussion about that. And boy will I miss that.

So here is today's tune from me... YOU'RE LIFE IS NOW. The video may be corny - but the visuals are perfect for my mood today. You're life is now - so live it now. You don't know when you'll close your eyes for a nap - and not ever wake up.

YOU'RE LIFE IS NOW - John Mellencamp
