For those who are interested and didn't already know, Raj's father is in the first episode of the new show The Orville, on Fox.

I'll be watching it JUST TO confirm how right I am about giving it a thumbsdown_tone1 .

Still, thanks for the heads-up about "Raj's Dad"; like him--looking forward to seeing him; regardless.

I liked it more than I expected to. It's not totally serious, of course, and nobody should expect that from Seth McFarlane. But it's quite possible that it's actually better than the new "official" series Star Trek: Discovery will be.

I thought I was the only one who watched that. The premiere was a typical pilot, more expository than anything, got better as it went along. The Physics pseudo-science bit kinda grinded my gears but it's comedy so I have to forgive it. I wasn't expecting the plot angle of him inviting his wife to join the crew. I thought it was funny and left a little room for growth.

All in all I liked it but they can't expect to get ratings up against Sunday Night Football.

I don't know if they expect it to stay on Sunday nights, my guess is not. Fox has been promoting it as a special two-night event, being last Sunday and this coming Sunday, which suggests it will move to a different day after that. At any rate, hasn't The Simpsons been doing pretty well against Sunday Night Football for over 20 years?

Indeed, according to epguides.com (a favorite of mine), it's moving to Thursdays after this coming Sunday. In effect, there are two new episodes airing next week: Sunday the 17th, and Thursday the 21st.

What pseudo-science bothered you? The time-field stuff? The little girl able to "leap tall buildings in a single bound?"

I looked up Brian George's credits and he has a few sci-fi shows there. The Expanse, a couple Star Wars and Star Trek titles, even a Quantum Leap and some others.

As for the pseudo-science just think of it as future science, or TV science.

The time field rubbish. Yes I know it's supposed to be comedy and not scientifically accurate or bound by Laws of Physics but I enjoy my science fiction when it doesn't become full on science-fantasy.

I compare it to that movie "Lucy" where they continue to parrot the "using 10% of your brain" myth.

And Simpsons is a legendary Anomoly, a show that might not end until the 4 horseman of the Apocalypse and such.

Well I might be willing to argue that the little girl "able to leap tall buildings in a single bound" is more ridiculous than the time field. But I also found the premise of Lucy to be ridiculous. What reason is there to believe that, even if we only use 10% of our brain now and it were possible to increase that to 100%, the result would be psionic powers etc? Utter claptrap.

Indeed. As beautiful as Scarlett was in that movie it couldn't distract me from the utter halarity of the premise. And Morgan Freeman's character delivered his speeches with such an ill-informed confidence you'd think the writers actually believed what they were writing.

Truth is if you're using less than 100 % of your brain you're dying.

The girl wasn't any better than the time field, definitely. Also, I missed the Orville episode yesterday because football ran late and pushed it back. How did it stand up to the pilot?

I watched--stopped halfway through--then decided to watch the rest since I figured: (1) I COULD HOLD OUT at least until "Raj's father" showed; and (2) how else could I give an informed opinion.

That Redwood-snacking-seed thing was so telegraphed that I almost bolted again.

But, must admit, I laughed at Capt. Mercer’s remark when "supergirl" (don’t remember her name) broke through that wall.

OVERALL: When it comes to parody-value, I'm thinking more "Galaxy Quest" than "Star Trek".

Not saying it's a bad show; and I'm a big fan of 'Adrianne Palicki' ('Bobbi' from "...S.H.I.E.L.D."); still, it is not the show for me.
