They have casted for the prequel- and the working title is "Young Sheldon". I hope they change that. Ian Armitage is Sheldon and Zoe Perry (Laurie Metcalf's real life daughter) is Mary Cooper. George Sr. is played by Leonard's high school bully (I can't remember the actor's name). I don't have high hopes for this. Do you?

New to this site- how do you edit your original post? Anyway ETA: I just noticed that Todd Spiewak is also EP on this pilot/show. Not usually a good idea for married/couples to work together....

When you make a post or topic above the box where you type your message you will see the word Preview above. Click on Preview and you can edit. It took me a while to get used to this but the layout here is pretty nice. I forgot to mention that the edit function is a gear shaped icon to the right under the submit box.

And after you post something you can later go back and edit. There's an edit/delete button in the lower right side of posts you've posted.
I have no hopes for this spin-off at all. The idea does not sound interesting to me. But as Jim is a producer of some sorts I hope it's successful.

I don't see it working, but I suppose we'll see. It could surprise us.
From what we've heard about Sheldon's early life, it can't be funny without messing with his backstory. I just can't see a show about a bullied friendless child with an alcoholic father, an overly religious mother, as well as siblings who tormented him, to be a hit.

As for the sequel I read that it is to be a single camera production, a technique that to me is played out. The only young genius show I recall is Doogie Howser MD and in a different way Small Wonder. I might take a look at it but don't care for it at all. Sheldon without the gang ?

I never watched it, but Malcolm in the Middle is another.

Chuck Lorre is one of the producers. Hasn't all his shows been a success?

I am optimistic about it, a show starring young sheldon is a cool prospect.

Young Sheldon will probably get new nerd friends_, and as in the original series these friends will have similar problems, like being smart but socially awkward, being bullied, having crushes, thinking up crazy inventions, having family moments and learning some lesson at the end of each episode. Hopefully there won't be any continuity issues from what is already known of Sheldon's childhood.

Well…
I think it has as much chance for success as any other.
There is nothing to say that fans of “The Big Bang Theory” will necessarily be a fan of this show…but the show doesn’t need that in order to succeed/survive.
Yes, no doubt, they would like for TBBT fans to show up for the new series; but "old fans" may not, necessarily, be their target-audience. Anyway, that still leaves scores of ordinary TV viewers out there to check it out OR not, base on content/premise/who is in it/who is producing/who is writing/or just because.
While TBBT fans may be thinking of the new series ONLY as: Sheldon-The-Early-Years; others, I’m guessing, won’t have that handicap. They won’t have the burden of some “fixed” idea of what they think it should or shouldn't be/should or shouldn’t do.
I see no reason to write an obit before, at least, checking-for-a-pulse.
I’ll be watching.

Ehh...they need to start looking for the next big sitcom idea and I don't think this is it.

Here's the thing about this prequel, it's going to need Sheldon, and a YOUNG Sheldon, to carry each episode. Even now, on TBBT, Sheldon, while being a 'main character', is still part of an ensemble. Most episodes of TBBT have time split between all the characters. For a show like YOUNG SHELDON, that's no longer the case. They are going to have to come up with ideas for the character that can carry up to 24 episodes a year. THAT is a tough goal. The last really successful character SPINOFF from a sit-com I can recall was FRASIER.
Lorre has been extremely successful, but has had a flop or two (Frannie's Turn ). But it doesn't take much for these guys who've been successful to suddenly fall off a cliff. Remember how David E. Kelly, and before him, Steven Bochco, could do no wrong? Then, suddenly, they lost their touch. Mainly because when you churn out the same stuff over and over again, just recycled with different characters and settings, the audience recognizes that and grows bored.
Personally, I don't have high hopes for YOUNG SHELDON, but I will give it a shot. I hope I'm wrong and it's both really good and a hit. But I have my doubts.

Even the NAME of the show lacks creativity. I have no faith in it whatsoever. but I will watch the pilot.

Let's give them credit for having some smarts...
Can’t help but think that Chucky and company have considered all the possible
and
arguments before going ahead with such a creation. It’s not as if we are talking about newbies...unfamiliar with the inter-workings and pratfalls associated with such an undertaking.
Since they have no doubt weighed the likelihood of success vs. failure AND STILL decided to go ahead, then I expect that they are pretty darn sure they have a product worth putting out there.
After all, 11 years ago who would have expected a sitcom about super nerds to be such a humongous success?!
Can't wait to see what they have for us!

I will give it a chance. But I don't think even they believe they've got a good product. It may be, but in reality, traditional network TV is dying a slow and steady death. Every network is bleeding viewers, and what is considered a 'hit' today would have gotten shows canceled 20-25 years ago. So doubling down on one of the few legit hit shows right now is the smart play. I'm frankly shocked it took them this long to spin something off. Given that garbage like "The Odd Couple" and "Man With A Plan" have gotten the Green Light.
