I just watched this again. I have to say I am getting tired of watching people who have a chance to take out Negan letting him escape serious harm. In this episode Rick was ambushed by Negan as he searched an otherwise empty house. A fight ensued with Rick eventually gaining the upper hand when he snatched 'Lucille', the barbed wired bat, away from Negan. I've gotta tell you, if I had that bat in my hands, and Negan lying on his back at my feet, I would have clobbered him. I would have hit him at least as hard as Negan hit Glenn. But what did Rick do? He basically bunted. He poked the handle end into Negan's face. Negan wasn't even stunned, and he immediately countered with a strike to Rick's nuts.
Now I know that Jeffrey Dean Morgan is an important character and they don't want to kill him off too soon, not when they are able to get so much mileage out of him. Ratings have been great since he came on the show. Everyone likes to hate Negan, and the desire to see Rick and the gang battle Negan and eventually kill him is what keeps so many tuning in again and again. So I get why they have not killed him off yet, and probably won't for at least a while longer. But when Rick or his people have a clear chance to do him serious harm, and then fail to take a real shot at him, I feel cheated. It would have been better to show Rick swing for the fences and miss than to show him bunt. He has plenty of reason and serious motivation for killing Negan.
Which brings me to my second gripe: the guy they call Jesus and his reticence to execute murderers. Jesus stopped Morgan from killing that jerk who gratuitously killed that kid, right in front of Morgan. Morgan told Jesus that he needed to die, but Jesus wouldn't go along with it. It should be clear to Jesus that Negan's disciples are wanton murderers. And if Morgan, a peaceful man if there ever was one, says that some man is basically an irredeemable and dangerous killer, who murders with glee and without compunction, then he should stay out of it. The Negan gang supports and participates in terrorist executions for the purpose of enslaving people. They are not reasonable, they cannot be trusted, and you cannot negotiate with them fairly. Your choices for dealing with them are: -let them torture, murder, and enslave your people, or kill them. "Jesus" knows they are like this. He should have let Morgan kill that man.
Of course, the writers will probably switch things around now and make me look stupid for saying that. lol

I suppose they need Jesus' moral position to contrast against Morgan's position on the Saviors, so that they can work a violence vs. nonviolence issue into the show again. I do agree that the Saviors are probably all irredeemable though. I guess Jesus has enough authority to block Morgan's call. If Morgan wants a Savior dead, there must be a pretty good reason for that, I'd figure.

Yeah, the violence vs non-violence issue allows writers to continue creating tension and conflict, which is a continual requirement in shows. If everything worked to plan, if everyone was pretty much in agreement, etc. they would have to create conflict and tension elsewhere by some other means. People would get bored if they didn't, I guess. There is no police department, no penal system, no justice system, and no military in the walking dead world. So they have to dispense justice, they have to defend rights, they have to fight wars, and they have to execute sentences. But Jesus told Morgan "if you kill him we will be no different than they are", which is nonsense. Morgan was prepared to execute an unrepentant murderer who kills for the fun of it, and who would continue to murder innocents if left alive. That is very different to what the Negan faction does.
I think that failure by Jesus to recognize the moral difference between the two, his equivocation, his willful blindness to the moral difference, and his self-righteous posturing about it, are what torked me off so much.
I was surprised also to see the 'Jesus' character equaling and almost besting Morgan in hand to hand. I don't recall Morgan ever losing since he learned to use that staff. And I don't recall seeing Jesus demonstrating such incredible fighting skills prior to squaring off with Morgan to stop him taking out that Negan sidekick.

Yeah, I keep wondering if and when the Saviors that Hilltop's holding prisoner will break free and cause some havoc. I wonder how being "different than they are" will count when the Hilltop's/Alexandria's/Kingdom's inferior numbers dwindle low....
