Was in the flash forward sequence in episode 1. How does this make sense?

I didn't take that scene as a flash forward. More like a dream sequence.

Well, I am not that far in the comics so I will have to take your word for it. That would leave some explaining to do.
I know the basic outline of the story though, enough to know that Carl's death would significantly affect the storyline going forward.
