I'm with you about Negan. They did a terrible job in casting the character. This guy is supposed to be the big bad villain but I'm just not feeling it. It's hard to believe that he would have all the followers he does..........he's not at all intimidating. Terrible choice for Negan.

It's also particularly unfortunate given the caliber of actor they've hired, and how proudly they've marketed his casting and built up the character's notoriety in their marketing. Yet nobody's impressed.
I like JDM a lot - I think he plays the character well. Over the top ham and chewing the scenery works for the character I think. If you cant tell if he's joking, or playing, or serious until he caves in your head then that'll keep you on edge...
However - when they cast him I'm sure the image the producers had in their heads was the Comedian. In that role (and even as Poppa Winchester) he was much beefier and physically intimidating.
As Neegan he seems much much leaner, and it does take away from the role a little.
It's a type of character and performance that might be fine in a certain type of film or show. The hammy lunatic is a pretty standard villain type in high-octane action thrillers, for instance.
But in a show that has avoided camp up to now and which previously gave us some very human villains like Shane and the Governor, Negan is clearly a step down.

I think Jeffry Dean Morgan is doing a great job on the show.
If anything they've toned Negan down from the comics to be more realistic. In the books he talks much more like an angry 12 year old on XBox Live.

I like JDM a LOT, but I am just not feeling him as Negan. I think he plays him a little too laid back. Negan in the comics is wired all the time.
