I must have missed something. Could someone explain to me why Rick lied to Negan about Maggie being dead, and why she has to hide from them?

Negan was showing an interest in having Maggie become his newest wife. Gabriel somehow anticipated this and put a cross with her name (and date of death) over a fresh grave. So Negan thinks she's dead, and having her suddenly alive again would be a problem. Enid went to Hilltop for much the same reason. One of the Saviors, a creepy older guy, was taking a more than just a bit of a liking to her. Come over here little girl. Just another reason why this whole situation with the Saviors is untenable. Maggie, Enid, Daryl ... you've got this growing list of people who have to duck into the nearest hole every time the Saviors show up. Sooner or later something's going to go bad.

I just don't remember that during the scene they had together (the Lucille death scene). Negan said after he visited Alexandria that it was too bad she is dead because he was thinking of asking her to be one of his wives. I didn't notice anything like that prior to his Alexandria visit. I do remember that it was Father Gabriel that made the fake gravestone. Maybe something was said to him?

When Negan says he was thinking about it, that basically means it was going to happen ... or else. Every one of his supposedly willing wives married him under duress. Likewise with Enid. If that outlaw biker reject decided he wanted her, she would've been part of the next tribute. You don't say no to the Saviors. However Gabriel got the idea, it was a stroke of genius. As long as none of the Saviors who know what Maggie looks like (such as Simon) ever set eyes on her.

I'm surprised the Saviour who doesn't like the word "veggies" didn't try it on with Enid too.

I got the impression he was trying to be creepy in an intimidating sort of way. Like the Saviors tend to do. What do I look like, a fucking delivery boy to you? Put the damn vegetables on the truck yourself. Enid was just an annoying kid to him.

What do you know, mensa boy returns! This board just hasn't been the same without his insightful commentary.

When Negan asked about Maggie, she was at the Hilltop for medical assistance. I'm pretty sure that Rick and Gabriel lie was to cover up the fact that they Hilltop and Alexandria are in contact and possibly working together to overthrow Negan. I don't think it had anything to do with protecting her from becoming another Negan wife. How would Gabriel have even known about Negan's wives at that point when he lied about Maggie's grave?

Good point! Negan may have been thinking about Maggie but he hadn't really shown the group any indication of that until he arrived in Alexandria. Unless Gabriel is telepathic now there's no way he could have known in time to dig a fake grave and mark it. But that makes perfect sense.

My point exactly. No one knew what Negan was thinking about Maggie. I do think the Hilltop connection theory makes some sense. I'll go with that.

Simon has seen Maggie, he was the guy who introduced Negan after the ambush, I think Simon then sat crosslegged on the hood of a truck eating an apple with a penknife while Negan then introduced Lucille to Glen and Abraham.

Which is exactly why she has to hide when the Saviors come to Hilltop. Simon and most of his entourage were there for Negan's little lesson to the Alexandrians, any one of them would probably recognize Maggie.
