Discuss The Walking Dead

Maybe this has been brought up before, but I've been catching up on the episodes...Guns are more harmful to them. The more they shoot, the more walkers they gather. They'll kill each other with guns, but whoever wins will have to deal with mob of walkers they'll attract.

Are there no other swords in Georgia except for Michonne's? There seems to be an unlimited supply of guns and ammo everywhere, what with all they've savaged and all. But they've never found a single sword? I don't recall anyone ever carrying a sword besides Michonne. Everyone else carries knives. Swords, in my opinion are the best weapons against zombies. But then, I guess they'd all rather kill each other instead of trying to rid the world of the dead.

Someone with no prior experience whatsoever could hold off a small group of walkers if you handed them a pistol. A total newbie with a sword would probably take one good swing, and decapitate a walker but get the blade stuck in a wall, or a tree, then have to abandon it and run. Either that or they'd end up cutting themselves. Guns are easier weapons to just pick up and use. Point and shoot. Fighting with swords isn't as simple as holding them by the hilt and swinging though. Only people who knew what they were doing, or had no other weapon, would be carrying one.

I understand a sword isn't as easy to use as a gun. Most of them had little to no prior experience using a gun as well. But they learned. To the point most of them become expert shots. But considering the dangers of attracting more zombies while using guns, you'd think some of them would try to learn using a sword. But with swords being so scarce, and guns being abundant, maybe they just never had the option.

I just meant that a gun is much easier to pick up and use at least somewhat effectively, even with zero experience. Becoming truly proficient in sword fighting takes years of training and practice. They're big, nearly impossible to conceal, and as Indiana Jones proved in Raiders of the Lost Ark even the most skilled sword fighter can be taken down quickly with a bullet. In our world they simply aren't practical weapons anymore. Against zombies though, a sword would have the advantages of being quiet and never running out of ammo. But to get one you'd have to find a martial arts studio or specialty shop that hasn't been looted to the bare walls. Or (and this is a real long shot with almost everyone dead) find someone who knows how to make them.

I agree and I also wonder why more people don't use bow and arrows when dealing with walkers. Granted, it might harder to get a head shot (except for Daryl, who seems to have 100% accuracy with his crossbow) but it's much quieter than a gun and it seems arrows could be massed produced unlike gun ammo that will eventually run out.

It may be quieter, but have you ever heard of a semiautomatic (or full automatic) bow? With a fully equipped machine shop you could manufacture bullets. Producing modern smokeless powder in enough quantity to fill them, that I'm not sure of. You need to be able to make new ammunition at least as fast as you're using it up. Anyone here familiar with the process?

You have made excellent points. Thanks for your insight. I can now continue watching this show with a little less frustrations.

I was actually going to mention bows and arrows also, then remembered that they showed residents of The Kingdom practicing archery.

Although there are thousands of walkers, people are the biggest and most dangerous problem in this new apocalyptic world.

Also, if you think a sword is difficult to handle, a bow and arrow is even more difficult. And, you'll always have to go fetch the arrow. Kinda difficult while fighting an army of walkers.

You'd retrieve your arrows when possible but mostly regard them as single use expendable ammunition. Fighting off a large group of walkers, when you can't actually kill them all, you'd never have the chance to recover any. A bow and arrow is far more effective against the living than the dead. With walkers, you're better off using an edged weapon at close quarters. Or a gun. Silencers aren't all that hard to make yourself, I'm surprised we've only seen them use ones they've recovered without ever trying to make their own.

The point to fighting walkers would be to kill them and put them down for good. Which was the purpose of me responding to the bow and arrow as a weapon.

The same would also apply with killing a person. You'd want the kill to happen with the first strike...regardless of the weapon of choice. It is just a waste of time to have to go back and target the brain. Otherwise, you'll be faced with reanimation of all those you killed.

We've seen so far that humans are more dangerous than walkers (unless you are completely stupid and wave your arms around in front of Dead Dave's rotting face as though they were giant, delicious torso-sausages).

That is why you want guns, if you try to defend yourself against bandits with only a sword.. well, you know the saying "never bring a knife to a gunfight."

You do know what a torso is, right?

Obviously, would you have preferred I called them shoulder sausages to narrow down the attachment location?

No. Arm 💪 sausages would be more accurate.
