Who do you think is the MVP - most valuable player - on the entire show run of The Walking Dead?
Bob was crafty. Andrea was beginning to be a badass. Shane was a great leader. He kept people alive even Rick when he was in a coma. Abraham was a strong arm. Eugene is a technical genius. Glenn was an awesome go getter.
LVPs are Rosita, Douglass and Maggie.

Daryl (before they turned him into a grunting, pacing ape) Then Carol, before they decided that they didnt know wtf to do with her character, thus ruining it all together.
So tossing those two aside like the worthless, pond scum that they turned into, I'd have to say that Hershel was the best character on the show. He was also played by a good actor, which I'm sure what helped the character turn out so great too.

How did Shane keep Rick alive when he was in a coma? He left him in the hospital and then left town. It was even implied in later episodes that he wanted Lori to himself.

Because Shane barred the door to Rick's hospital room with a hospital bed so that it appears to be thrown there in the chaos. Also Shane anticipated that the zombies weren't smart enough to move a hospital bed out of the way to search inside of the rooms.
I thought that was very thoughtful. What did you want Shane to do? Take Rick off life support, put him on a stretcher and drag him around in the middle of a zombie invasion?
It was never implied that Shane used Rick being incapacitated to make his move on Lori. That was the story Lori told Rick when she cleverly tried to manipulate the situation into driving a wedge between Shane and Rick. She succeeded.

Not a fair question, since those who have been around the longest will end up being more valuable. But we haven't seen how valuable others can be.
For me, I'd say the top three are: Abraham Ford Eugene Porter Dwight
