The trolls are not the reason IMDb shut down the boards. The reasons are: 1- not enough profits; 2- Leftist Hollywood and tv celebrities felt embarassed by average people telling what they thought about them and not following their instructionss or pandering to their political leanings. They couldn't stand being insulted on a daily basis by the very people they wanted to influence with their feeling of self-importance.

I don't understand how politics has anything to do with shutting down the forums. Profits? I could see that. Especially since it became an advertising platform for Amazon. Leftist celebrities? I just can't believe that would be a reason. I mean, if that were the case, no social platform would exist because every platform has people on it who poke fun, speak in favor for and against celebrities, have some off the wall fanfic, etc. Twitter, for example, would implode and shut down. Could someone please explain how leftist celebrities shut down the other forums? I'm not trying to sound like a troll myself as I'm genuinely curious as to how politics shut down the forums...

Ok. Like I've said elsewhere I really don't pay attention to them and don't care about their opinions. I have finely honed apathy about most people on the internet, as far as negativity goes.

I don't think shutting down imdb boards was a political decision. The boards were monitored, and I think the vast content became unmanageable, and therefore unprofitable. Lots of trolls and rudeness on those boards. It would be great to have discussions where people can disagree amicably. It would also be great to leave political content on boards that are purposed for politics.

I agree about the politics. I see enough of it in my Facebook feed! Someone had commented on this thread two reasons why IMDB shut down and one of those reasons was because of leftist celebrities. So, I was wondering what that had to do with anything with regards to the shutdown.

Blaming everything on liberals? Yeah, that's often a good indication you've got a right wing troll. Just like blaming everything on conservatives often indicates a left wing troll. You have to keep in mind, of course, that trolls typically set up multiple accounts and often agitate a whole group into arguing by having two of their sock accounts face off in a left-right slugfest. You never really know what a troll believes themselves since their purpose on the board is to create chaos. They'll say whatever it takes to get a rise out of people.

And it doesn't take much money to moderate a forum. A relatively few individuals are responsible for large numbers of trolling posts, and each one you IP ban puts a noticeable dent in the number of complaints you need to process going forward. The problem really is manageable. It's mostly trolls themselves who propagate the idea that controlling them is too daunting a task to bother with, and we should therefore accept their presence. See how that works? You can't beat us. It's too much effort. Just give it up! Amazon closed the IMDB boards for several reasons, by far the most important being that most of their ad revenue comes from other parts of the site and so (being short sighted and greedy) they conclude it's an unprofitable feature they can afford to get rid of. Trolls are a convenient excuse. Nothing more. Better than saying: we're greedy, and don't care if our users are satisfied or not as long as we make money. See that would be honest. It would also be horrible PR!

Thanks Chris, I was only guessing why it was closed down, I don't really know why. I don't post that often, and I thought my rationale was original, not widely used by trolls. I agree with you that it's probably about money. 💰
