(Spoilers)
This was a big disappointment.
First, it's true what many mentioned: there was no truly good reason to go on that mission. The dragons, which should've escorted them to begin with, show up anyway...except too late and already in danger.
All because of 1 walker to convince Cersei. Apparently, no one with a brain is left in this show (or in the writers room).
So stupid- they're surrounded by walkers for which seems like hours, or a day, Hound undisciplined drills one in the face with a rock. Nothing happens. He does it again, apparently just because he's bored, and this one skips the ice and lands short of contact...THIS is what finally triggers them to engage them after all that time standing there surrounding them outnumbered 200 to 1? A rock not reaching them? So then they all start marching in..
Snow, instead of just hopping on the dragon, decides to stay down just to kill 2-3 more walkers (like they were SO dangerous- they looked like the weakest kind), and as a result not only almost gets the dragon and everyone, or anyone, killed, but ends up almost dying himself. (oh I see they took a page from the Revenant: fall in ice water and come out like it's nothing jeopardizing to life- no hypothermia at all, yeah okay). But anyway, all that he had to do was hop on. Killing 2 more worthless walkers on the ground was so important.
Where did Uncle Ben come from? Suddenly he appears? How did he know Jon was still back there?....But worst of all, he decides to stay back and die....Omg this is so stupid. Ever hear of 2 people fitting on a horse?...Ben: "No, I'll just get killed for nothing."
Tyrion has turned Danaerys into a wuss, except for her defying his advice to do nothing and go help the crew behind the wall. She is totally missing the Kal Drago inspired, audacious person she once was. Tyrion even admits (through the writers) He worked out a deal to keep Dany less impulsive. Dany is becoming so soft from her once Dothraki-raised fearless self.
I'm sorry, but as much as I love the cinematography, action, and a handful of characters, the writing for this episode was so illogical. It was really like nothing that happened behind the wall had to happen, but they did it just for spectacle and got 2 people at least and one big dragon killed. Just for a dead walker to impress and convince their enemy Cersei. That's so stupid.
By the way, who died on the stupid mission? Just Thoros (or whatever his name)? And is he the one who can bring people back to life? Did Jon Snow accidentally kill somebody? I couldn't see, but I think he did. It was too dark.

I'm not going to read through the whole thread to see if someone already mentioned this but they were there for at least 3 days, it wasn't hours.
Ice takes a long time to freeze. Especially when it comes to holding the weight of that many wights.

could the bear be considered a 'scout' for the knight king?

I think so, it had the characteristic blue eyes and behaved like it had an assignment to to kill them. I don't believe hunger would have been the driving force for the undead or at least one that hasn't been brought up yet, they may be technically zombies, they don't eat flesh, they appear to do what they're ordered to do, fight and kill, add to the hoard.
That dragon is sure gonna be a scout for the Night King imo, he'll likely send it on a reco. op and eventually I would like to see him riding that SOB, that would be badass which is pretty much all GoT's is aiming at, action without logic, but I'll take what I'm given. The change in quality of writing since the OG double R Martin left. We were lucky to get that much out of him in the first place I suppose. I can ride out the remainder of the show hoping that events as illogical as recent happenings are minimized.
Maybe we're being too hard on the writers, I can definitely see a ton of pressure being put on them by producers to get from point A to Z by any means even if they have to walk in reverse to get there which is what happened in the last episode, so the writers may be working under fire. Still the logic cannot continually be forfeited just to get the table set a certain way or it's gonna be a long Season 8. I think season 8 will be much tighter with a lot of scheming and maneuvering from all parties/sides/etc. I just hope that when it comes time for the final series wrap it's done very very meticulously, covering everything and everyone that they've implanted into our minds over the years instead of illogical nonsense. AND do it within the confines of their established characteristics, behave like we know them to behave.
A lot of writing a bit OT, but I can't help myself when loaded with caffeine in the AM😲 .

They keep saying that they have to convince Cirsei about the danger in the north. Actually they don't . The person that they have to convince is Jaime. Unlike Cirsei, who mainly wants to stay in power, Jaime does feel a duty to protect the kingdom from danger. If Jaime decides that the zombie threat has higher priority than the civil war, there is nothing Cirsei can do to make him fight Danny.

The complaint that they didn't arm themselves with dragon glass is just completely false. Jorah's weapons are very clearly made of dragonglass, and Jon Snow doesn't need dragon glass since his sword is made of Valerian steel. Gendry can't fight with swords and I'm not sure they brought enough weapons for the brotherhood, not knowing that they would be there. I'm also not sure if Tormund had Dragonglass or not, because he's one character they knew was going to go with them beyond the wall.
