I am re watching and in season 1 Jon saves the man (Marmount?) from the "zombie". Is he Jorah's dad? I think so but I don't understand how - if he is one of the Knights Watch.

While I'm at it ... why all the trading of kids?? Robert and Ned were raised together by Jon Aryn .... why?

Yes that is Jeor (The Old Bear) is Jorah's father. He didn't join the Night's Watch until Jorah was a full grown man, I believe he joined to make way for Jorah to take lead of house Mourmont.

Thank you! I didn't catch it the first time around - this time it confused me.

In 'our world' it was standard practice for children of the 'aristocracy' (mainly the boys) to be sent to another 'aristocrats' home (or to the King/Queens court) as pages or in other capacities. Girls from aristocratic families would sometimes be sent to foreign courts. It happened probably through the 18th century.

They were basically hostages no ensure peace. Obviously some treated their "guests" better than others. Theon seems to have been treated well at Winterfell.

In the Middle Ages a lord would sometimes send his son to another lord to be educated in chivalry, maybe to avoid showing favoritism. Westeros may have done that before the revolt against the Targaryans embittered everybody.

Even Ned's training of Theon might be an echo of that -- but failed because Theon's family made him betray the Starks.

Thanks everyone!
