It seems a waste of time and effort to bring him back just to see him fight the Mountain. As awesome as that might be, surely there's more to his story, right? Besides Jon, is there anyone else that has been killed or written-off then return to the show? It seems they'd only do that for important reasons. So, what is in store for the Hound?

I never thought Jon was gone for good. I realize "fake death" is more ambiguous than I intended. I was trying to refer to being written off the show for good.

The show writers had it very similar to the way it is in the books (there was no fight with brienne though, that was totally made up by the show writers) the hound isnt back in the books yet and it is left vague as to whether he is alive or dead in the books (but there are plenty of subtle clues that he is alive)
I very much doubt stannis is alive though...
