Oh man. Right out of the gate we got climate change protests. We got some gay guys. A black guy. A chick who is part American Indian. All of the things you will not find in a town like this, except maybe the American Indian chick.
Only 8 episodes...not a good sign for the future. EDIT: 10 episodes according to IMDB.

Well, it's believable for Miami or any large city. Not for a fictional small town in upstate New York. I'm from upstate New York. Trust me. These small towns are not that diverse.

Jeez...I just read the reviews on IMDB. Seems I'm not alone commenting on the wokeness...

What exactly is "woke" about being black?

There's only one dude triggered and that's the OP but he will probably crawl back under his rock now.

I wonder if the white folks (incidentally, I'm white) who complain about "wokeness" realize how creaky and clearly entitled-feeling it comes off them (such said whites) appearing, that, God forbid, other races, groups, etc. are, these days, finally getting more than just a mere pittance of front-and-centre representation in films and on t.v. - even though of course white (and for that matter straight) characters do continue be what we mostly, by far, see, therefore that get the lion's share of screen time.
You know, Black, Latino, Arabic, American Indian, Asian, gay, etc. actors need work, too - not just the white (and male, and straight) actors. Why does seeing more representation of diversity on screen these days bug some people so much? I mean, no one's forcing anyone to watch anything they don't want to or that might disturb their sensibilities.

Look, I'm pretty good at sniffing out PC/SJW stuff but so far (2 episodes in) I'm not getting that strong enough vibe. As someone else pointed out the original show had a diverse cast and this one seems to be factoring in Native American territory as a plot point (reminds me a bit of Wind River). The kids being climate change activists is the biggest red flag, but they're played by young white liberal kids, who are 100% the type of people who would be climate change activists. I would be shocked if a show _didn't _show a young white girl as an annoying liberal.
Also the one gay guy's character isn't completely wrapped up in him being gay, he owns the shop Dexter works at and Dexter manipulates him in order to lead the investigation the way Dexter wants it ago so, again, nothing too egregious there.
The only obvious thing so far is the the guy Dexter kills is your stereotypical rich douchebag and the main killer is clearly a white guy (probably the main rich guy but that could be a red herring).

Did you actually start this discussion with a straight face. The fact that you consider representation as "woke" whatever you think that is, makes your humanity questionable. Does it hurt to know that other people exist apart from cishet white people? You and other racist and homophobic douches better buckle up because it's whole differnet world and there is not a single thing you can do about it. Bitchin doesn't count.

unlike the Asian guy, the Hispanic chief of police, all the black cops, and the gay characters in the first Dexter. So different. Where guys whining about the same characters in the first show? Honestly woke isn't the issue it's straight white guys that are super sensitive.

Same here. I can sense box checking like a bad stink. But so far in this new Dexter show it hasn't been nearly as bad to the point of taking me out of the show, though when Jamie Chung showed up I was thinking "Asian box, checked". But she's not nearly as interesting as Masuka.

Are people missing the concept of "the FICTIONAL town of Iron Lake, NY"? There is an Iron Lake in NY but it's just a body of water. NOT a town.
The lake is a 1.5 mile hike from NY-10. No cottages. No town. Only thing nearby (1.5 miles away) is Adirondacks Lodge.
It's actually shot in/near Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts. An real town of about 1,750 people. Try basing your mindset on that size town.
And even if it was in upstate NY, it's still possible for there to be gays, blacks and hispanics living there. And protesters! Worcester NY - 2,200 pop - has all of those in it. Not many but they are there. And the residents protest at times on things they believe in. Don't believe me? Go into any place in that town and say the word "FRACKING" and see just how "woke" they not only are, but have been for years.
No, little towns aren't as "diverse" as larger cities/towns in upstate NY. But they still have some diversity.
Gotta say, one thing I'm not missing is the (at times) blaring salsa/latino music from the original series. The music itself wasn't as much of an issue as the volume of it, when you're trying to pick out the dialog going on at the same time.

Not sure how much variety of TV shows and movies you watch but you'd likely be surprised how many things are "pretending" to be in small/medium American Towns, that are shot entirely in Canada and they toss in enough 'stock footage' from the real (or somewhat real) American location.
I'd say the majority of Hallmark movies and TV productions are shot in Canada. EG: Aurora Teagarden Mysteries. All of them are supposedly in Montour Falls, NY based on the opening scene.
https://i.imgur.com/y25eDtQ.png
But they are all filmed in Squamish and Abbotsford, British Columbia.
It's all about what you can fool people into believing. The "magic" of television. Montour Falls has a pop. of 1,711. The Teagarden movies clearly show a _much _larger town/city with the number of locations, schools, government buildings, etc. etc. (Which the two in BC have.)
Dexter goes a step further by giving a place name (iron lake) that exists but there's **no **town.

My train of thought: When the first Dexter show it ended showing he was a lumberjack. And I assumed Washington state or somewhere. Then when the new show started my mind was set on that location - even though he was a store manager not a lumberjack. It wasn't until this thread then looking at license plates I realized it was upstate NY. I do like that they tackled murders of native American women. A sad problem that does exist. BTW I'm in Atlanta where we are substituted for all parts of the US when filming. We affectionately call Atlanta Y'allywood.
