Jack being so hard ball these days

Jack seems so different these days. It doesn't suit the character very much.
Is all of this because he lost the woman he wanted so much... Phyllis?

I've read somewhere the writers are softening TGVN and making Jack harder and more ruthless, a la "old Victor". I hope not. I don't like this Jack.

I have mixed feelings about ruthless Jack. I guess I don't mind too much seeing him stick it to Billy and Phyllis, but when he's going after people he is cool with like Lauren, I don't like that too much. As far as Victor, I don't like softer, gentle Victor. I was tired of his hand being in everything shady, but I don't like this gentle version either. I think both characters need a good balance, be ruthless when they need to be and be kind to the people they care about.
