The Movie Database Support

Dear TMDB Support Team, I'm experiencing an issue with the search functionality on your API. Specifically, I'm trying to search for movies with an exact title match, but the results are not accurate.

For example, when I search for the title "Mod" with the year 2021, the first result is "Girl Model" instead of the exact match independent word Mod "Mod - The Turn" which is listed further down.

I've tried using quotes around the title, exact phrase search, and title search parameters, but none of these solutions have worked. Could you please assist me in resolving this issue or provide guidance on how to achieve an exact title match search?

Is there any filter for industry like Hollywood, Bollywood, etc.

Thank you for your time and support. Best regards, alwin

I am having the same issue.

There isn't really support for exact matches. We have an open ticket for that here.

I’m not sure I understand what you mean about lack of support for exact matches. My issue is that there are a handful of films where the TMDB search function simply does not work if you input any relevant search term. The latest one I have discovered is Sister, Sister (1987). The only way to find the full information is to input the name of someone connected with the film, in this case Eric Stolz, and then click on the the relevant link naming the film on his page. This would be fine if I were just looking for information. However, I am trying to add unmatched titles to my media player. The matching is supposed to be automatic, but there are quite a number of unmatched films, the vast majority of which can be found by playing around with search terms relating to the film’s title. The relatively small number of films which can’t be matched this way are exactly the same as those for which a direct search on TMDB’s website fails to yield results, as described above.

The search engine will give you all the movies that match the criterion you have entered wether it is an exact match or a partial match. Nothing guarantee that an exact match will be listed first.

For example, if I search for "sister, sister", I got the "Sister, sister (1987)" movie in the middle of the 5th page of results.

You will always get a better result if you add the year to your search. If I search for "sister, sister y:1987", I got the "Sister, sister (1987)" movie as the second result.
