The Movie Database Support

Hi guys! This is a topic for anyone who, like me, finds it ridiculously hard to add crew credits. smile_cat

My first objective was to build a list of all the jobs available and, thanks to @Janar, the biggest part of the job is already done. My proposition is that we add any other form these credits may appear as and specification when necessary (e.g. the difference between Music and Original Music Composer), but I am open to suggestions. I really don't want this to be a mod-only project, everyone is welcomed to contribute! If you are entering credits for a film or a TV show and notice the on-screen credit is different from the credit in the database, please come by and let us know. nerd

I thought it would also make sense for this topic to double up as an help topic for confusing crew credits.

Please let me know if you spot errors on the list, but please do not request jobs missing from TMDB. The official topic for new crew job requests is here. clipboard

I always (try) to change the german and such character names when i see them!

Well, how often do you do this? 1 time per week? 1 time per day? I assume there are hundreds of German character names added weekly, and you're proudly stating that you follow the rule and try to translate them when you see them. Don't you see that this doesn't solve the problem that most of the other users don't follow the rule - for whatever reason? And that's only German - do you do the same for all the other languages, too? And do you correct other moderators who don't follow this rule?

Yeah, though I think that's mostly because people don't even bother to read the rules (even if it's right where you add it, I mean the amount of voice work added without(voice) or uncredited with (uncredited) is insane. Or (uncredited) profiles with only (uncredited) (they should be deleted).. or the amount of dub actors added. Just the day before yesterday I think I deleted about twenty profiles again because of all-dub.).
But, just because people don't follow rules, should we abandon them? Just because some people rape others, or commit murder, should they not be put to trial, for breaking "the rules". (OK, that's a extreme comparison, but still x']). I think you have a great point with the jobs... some of them just don't map well to English ones. Even with Dutch jobs that's the case. But I think for character names it's best to keep it in English (or, if it's never gonna be translated, like lineker said, the original language. Just not the contributors language, whatever they which. There should be some structure).

I think the job searching is especially tedious because you have to type it from the start, you can't type "Photo" and get "Director of Photography". If that's improved (like with the episode search in episode groups), I think at least that process of adding a correct job (English on English I'm taking about) will improve.

No, it's actually a pretty dumb comparison and it's way off from what I was writing about! You obviously did not understand what I was trying to say. worried

I did not suggest that we should abandon this rule or rules in general. I was questioning this and other rules itself in regards to the overall concept of TMDb and how we could improve our way to help contributors to follow them. I tried to explain that, 1.) while Travis wants TMDb to be an international place where you don't have to know English to be a contributor, this specific and other rules are in contradiction to this goal at it's core. I also tried to explain that 2.) there's a contradiction when we explain to users that they should add original on-screen credits on one hand, but then we explain to them that they have to translate character names into English for all non-english films. And I tried to point out that 3.) changing contributed non-English character names here and there afterwards by some of us mods like you won't solve this huge issue when lots of users and even some of us mods don't follow this rule on a daily basis.

In short: I was writing about changing, or at least questioning, some of the TMDb rules for the benefit of all of us. Because these rules are not carved in stone, and it's obvious to me that they're not really working right now, that they lead to lots of problems, and that they should be improved in the future.

I didn't suggest the bold part at all. My idea was to follow the original language of each film consequently by implementing an even stricter rule of our mantra: "original on-screen credits". Meaning, we should use whatever language the original screen credits are in, for both the cast AND the crew jobs. Which would mean no translations at all - a police officer in a German movie would be added as a "Polizist", in a Polish movie as a "Policjant", in a Japanese movie as a "警察官", and so on. Again, I was suggesting to change this rule or to replace it, I was not suggesting to abandon the rule. Because I think the rule is dumb for many reasons: The majority of users/mods don't follow it, it's contradictory to our original-screen-credit rule, and it's contradictory to Travis' goal of an international website.

I'm afraid that's pure wishful thinking. In my opinion, this won't solve the bigger conceptual issues regarding adding crew jobs that I mentioned in my earlier posts. worried

For the 1938 film "Yellow Jack" there is the job "In Collaboration With" in reference to "ScreenPlay". Should I just enter it as a second ScreenPlay contributor, or something else?

In Music in the Air (1934) there is a crew credit for Lyrics and Libretto: Oscar Hammerstein

Lyracist + ScreenPlay does not sound quite right. Suggestion?

Same flick, there is:

Musical Adaptation: Franz Waxman

I assume this is to adapt the screenplay to be more musical/operaish

It seems yesterday IMDb changed the way they display jobs. While not exactly like on TMDb - they still retain the single job important categories - it's more like TMDb for sure. new_moon_with_face

Just noticed this mistake:

We have a "Lighting Artist" and several similar forms in the section "Lighting". But a "Lighting Artist" works in computer graphics and animation, meaning this label belongs into the section "Visual Effects". We already have a "VFX Lighting Artist" in this section, which is practically the same job label.

At the moment, due to this mistake, we produce a credit list for a person like this one:

https://www.themoviedb.org/person/1479537-catherine-catie-lee

That's obviously wrong! worried

@janar:

It's hurting to say aloud, but this problem is one of dozens, if not hundreds concerning the credits policy ('animation' is also not so correct to replace 'animator'), that exist for long time and will stay here until the TMDB moders (all or majority of them who have) unite the fundamental ideas and, at last, make the weighted all-round solution for credits segment in the whole construction of TMD*Base*. The solution awaited years ago is not going to solve out by itself, as we see.

Moreover, a technical side of solution is at the end of the list and is far from to be enough. Moders have also to take stock on the lingustic aspects, the knowledge (not just erudition) of cinematography (as science and art), the existing traditions and glossology (synonims in great importance), the comfortable and monosemantic structure for end users, the principles and structure of databases... The named things stay partially in mutual negation, it is not easy to find the edge balance but they have to. Without the solution, the existing system has no good chances to be clever, comfortable and sustainable. Otherwise, it would be better to reject the multi-language features for credits (as it is for persons' names) and just allow contributors to put credits they see into appropriate sections.

One more "fresh" illogical placing: Special Effects Coordinator in Crew (correct), but Special Effects Supervisor in Visual Effects (neigboring the Visual Effects Supervisor). I've never noticed, but utilized both without back thoughts.

CG Supervisor (and CGI Supervisor) is in Crew, but should be in Visual Effects. The same for Supervising Animator, and (UPD1) for Compositor.

UPD2: "Creature Design", "Lead Creature Designer", "Character Designer" and "Lead Character Designer" are under Visual Effects now, but they would be Art Department.

UPD3: Visual Effects Editor is placed to the general Crew section (?!), while its short variant (VFX Editor) is in the correct Visual Effects.

Hey guys. Question. I've been working on old silent films and there's a job "Titles" pertaining to the Writing department. Could it be added? Or is it already added? I don't want to just enter them as Writer. Example here: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0176713/?ref_=ttfc_fc_wr1

I agree... you don't understand! He's listed as Titles, like some are listed as screenplay, dialouge and so on. It's part of the Writing group, but to simply credit him as writer is not accurate. See this link https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0019423/fullcredits?ref_=tt_ov_wr#writers/ , and you'll see credits for Screenplay, Story and Titles. There are job for Story, Screenplay we use all the time here. I'm just asking we also add Titles. Titles BTW is the dialog that occurs on screen in the absence of audio.

I think you should request it. I don't see it in the current job list nor in the masterlist of new job requests.

Hello all. When is it going to be uploaded the new list ? THx

Hi @travisbell here is a list of some of the obvious errors in our current crew job list, thanks @banana_girl for the original list thumbsup Could you at least fix Costume Designer and Production Designer right away? I think many of us are tired of correcting bad credits, and this would at least eliminate some of them slight_smile

Could you at least fix Costume Designer and Production Designer right away?

Costume Designer is a correct dupe to fix. However, Production Designer is a correct producer credit for Japanese productions per another moderator.
