What Is An API Key?

I'm sorry if there is a thread on this already. I searched through about fifteen pages in here before giving up and just asking. Is this something I need to have as a user on this site? I am not overly tech savvy, though I've been using a computer since the late 80s when all there was, was DOS. That said, I really don't know technical terms, I don't use Facebook or any of the other stuff out there now. I'm here from IMDB, but there's a lot here I see in my account page I don't understand.

OH! OK, thank you! No, I'm definitely NOT a programmer, so I'll just skip that little thing, lol. Unfortunately, when it comes to computers, I know JUST ENOUGH to be dangerous... to myself... I destroyed a computer on accident once thanks to following the "suggestions" that Ccleaner Registry made, and erased several key files from my computer. My tech guy told me in no uncertain terms when I got my new computer to NEVER use that part of Ccleaner again. I've been very careful to listen, lol. Haven't had problems since.
