How are multiple Release Dates handled?

Shouldn't there be a spot for both Festival release dates and official DVD/Blu-ray releases?
It's just odd when you have a movie that was shown at a film festival a few years before the actual release, but then the release shows the Film Festival as the year of the movie. This also leads to confusion as to the certification of the movie for that country since most movies are not certified during the film festival release.
My overall question is: Which release date should be the one added? And why aren't multiple release types per country supported?

As of the latest update to TMDb, multiple release dates are now supported for a single territory.
