Hi Travis,
Wondered whether we could add the following jobs :
Carpenter
Casting Associate
Hair Department Head
Thx
Mod edit:
You can request missing crew jobs in this topic. The new crew jobs have to be English and free of spelling mistakes. Please specify in which of the following departments each new job should be created: Directing, Writing, Editing, Camera, Production, Art, Costume & Make-Up, Visual Effects, Sound, Lighting, or Crew.
Kindly try to avoid making duplicates job requests (search the last few pages), or requesting crew jobs that are already added to TMDb.

I guess it's can be a difficult task, but you have to learn it I guess. That's how I did it. If you want to go through all the jobs in a department to see if it already exists under another name or title, you can just begin writing something in the "job" field, erase it, and then there should be a bar you can scroll down and check all jobs. It's how I noticed that "Re-recording mixer", a common job title, is called "Sound re-recording mixer". Stuff like that. That's why I think you should go through the lists before you decide that it should be added. :)

Well, I've already tried that in the past, and to me there is no logic between deciding when a separate job title is required for a similar sounding (or not similar sounding- but similar in practice) job role to an already existing one on tmdb, and deciding a separate job title isn't required and the similar sounding (or not similar sounding but similar in practice) already existing job role on tmdb can be used instead. It seems arbitrary, or at least, not common sense/obvious for the average user. I feel like it comes down to requiring in depth/specific knowledge of the film industry or knowledge of tmdb's changing perspectives on how to credit job roles.
The contribution bible says the following things:
1) "If a job has not yet been added to the database, the person should not be added with a different job or to the cast section. What you should do is suggest that the job be added to the database here and be patient".
This seems to say that as long as a job has not been added to the database the person should not be credited.
2) "If you're not sure about how a credit should be entered in the database, please ask, don't guess".
This is great and all, but it seems like a lot of effort and quite inefficient. I guess I could learn them, but there's a lot of film credits, way too many to keep track of. I could meticulously keep a record of responses to when there isn't an exact match for jobs and the "alternative names" of existing job titles in the db, but that sounds like too much work and also possibly a pointless task if it seems like TMDB is still working on how to credit film roles and have an ongoing project to add roles to the db.
EDIT: LOL I was a lil' harsh here. hahah
Yeah, if we're gonna have this thing on tmdb where one job title has multiple "alternative names" then I'd just prefer if there was a in-built system- similar to alternative names for people.

I agree that it's inefficient and takes a lot of effort, but I also guess it has to be that way, for now at least. I also agree 100 % that if job titles worked more like names (minus the free add new job title), it would be better. Both to be able to have alternative names for a job, but also to make later words in title searchable (to make original music composer show up when you type composer, to have "re-recording" show up "sound re-recodring mixer and so on.) I just don't know if that's doable. I'm pretty new here too so. Until then I guess we have to slowly go through all the job titles there is. I hope you understand that my first reply to you wasn't an attempt to show you up, just to help you find the names for titles you maybe had missed that I knew were already in the database under different wording. :)

Could you please add "Titles" as part of the "Writer" department? This is a very common credited job for all silent films! Thanks

I'm hoping for an update too!
Among jobs already in the database, the duplicate ADR Editor job still needs to be removed and there is a misplaced Location Scout in the Art Department (that job should be in Production with the Location jobs).
Oh, I almost forgot, the confusing Production Designer job in Production should be removed completely. I've come across several bad credits added because of that one.(I'm also not a fan of adding duplicate jobs like Composer when we have had an established Original Music Composer credit for the last 10 years. And maybe the Costume Designer credit that was added despite Costume Design being the choice job for eternity can be removed as well. Perhaps I missed some discussions about this - so maybe it's fair that I get to see some jobs I don't like when I left the discussion. Over and out.
)
Edit: Updated the post for clarity regarding a job.

I do agree that it's unfortunate many users don't take enough care to see that "Production Designer" is in the Production department, but I don't believe it should be removed because of that. It is a real credit I've seen numerous times..

We have Production Design for that credit and it has worked fine for 10 years. Sorry, if I was unclear. Sometimes the same job can exist with many different minor spelling variations. A notable example: re-recording mixer, sound re-recording mixer, sound re recording mixer, re recording mixer, sound re-recording mixing, re-recording mixing etc. I don't think it makes it easier for users if we carry all variations (unless it was somehow possible to add them as alternative names, but I guess that is too complicated).

They're different things - 'production design' is kinda like 'art direction', here on TMDB at least considering it's in the Art department.
