How to deal with production or release dates in extinct countries? I see no way to add them to the list, so it seams to be impossible to enter different release dates for east and west germany or to decide whether consider a czechoslovak movie as czech or slovak one

I don’t even know what is meant by keywords. Keywords are tags for the movie?

Samara and Elizabeth Jennings were discussing country name vs. keyword for East Germany, I believe, about 1/2 of the way down the previous page of this discussion:

I would suggest it as a Keyword.

I would suggest keywords aren't sufficient, as has been discussed, I see no argument provided for the use of keywords in this situation, but many for the inclusion of the historic countries.

I was sort of mystified by that conversation between them, and I'm guessing Moon Doggie was also mystified.

Ahh. Totally missed that. Just came here to post my reply for thinking west germany was removed. While it probably wasn’t there to begin with!

But i don’t think it should be solved with keywords. If it cant happen. Alright but keywords arent an option if you ask me.

It seems like "East Germany" can't be selected (anymore?) as a release country, while other extinct countries ( e.g.Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia) can. Strangely, for origin country and production country it works, but not as release country. Could somebody involved with the programming of this site (@travisbell ?) maybe have a look at it?

Please add Russian Empire. Now all films on the site released before the USSR period belong to modern Russia, which is not historically accurate.

some minutes ago i tried to set release date/ year to 1978 for https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/256329-der-meisterdieb because the movie was dated wrong to 2011... had to add double Phantom entry, because database showed wrong date and i was unable to edit the existing East Germany / XG Entry

Outrageous you can't add extinct Countrys as Release Country.

Maybe using "Earth" as Fixed entry for all Countrys because it's better for the database...

Der Meisterdieb aired first on TV in East Germany and started in cinema 23.03.1979 so it's correct listed here now http://maerchenfilm.info/filme-dermeisterdieb1978.html

Been watching (and editing a few) DEFA movies this week, and it seems this is still an issue. East Germany can be selected for both "Origin Country" and "Production Country," but it is absent from the "Release->Country" and also "Alternate Titles" lists. Since these lists seem to be inconsistent and dependent simply on what someone with access has bothered to add, I wonder: is there any reason all four of the country lists (Production/Origin/Release/Title) can't be exactly the same? Either linked or copied manually?

"Soviet Union" is present in all 4 lists, so it seems this is possible and supported. To be clear, it also seems to be preferred by TMDB rules: "When available, please choose the producing country as it was named at the time of production." Not aware of any reason why this would be desirable for production country only, and not all Production/Origin/Release/Title selections—particularly since the country with the first release date is what shows on the main page directly under the title, making it the de facto country of primary association for casual readers.

Since it was brought up earlier in this thread (and potentially implied by "East Germany"), I don't think "West Germany" needs to be listed in the same way (and isn't currently, in any list). "West Germany" was an unofficial name used purely for clarification/cultural reasons, and is in fact the same state that exists today (always officially the GFR). From the wiki: "The reunited Germany is the direct continuation of the state previously informally called West Germany and not a new state, as the process was essentially a voluntary act of accession: the Federal Republic of Germany was enlarged to include the additional six states of the German Democratic Republic."

Personally it seems very desirable to me, to be able to select the country as it existed at the time from all of these lists. It's a matter of simple accuracy, and otherwise can lead to some problematic factual revisionism and absurdities. Germany was discussed here, but is probably the worst example since it was culturally/politically reunited, and partially continuous. Take a hypothetical example as more illustrative of problems: next year, Saudi Arabia annexes the USA and Russia (unlikely, but not impossible). Thereafter, all Hollywood, current Russian Republic, and former USSR films would be listed as Saudi productions, with original Saudi release dates (if only current countries are listed as options)—even though the vast majority of those films were never released (or were even specially banned) in Saudi Arabia at the times which would now be listed in TMDB. While a silly example, in important respects it would be precisely analogous to most countries with regime/territory changes, which currently aren't available in this database.

For a more concrete current example of this, Hong Kong has been changed to "Hong Kong SAR China" in all lists...meaning Blade Runner currently says it was produced partially in a Chinese political territory, when in fact it was a British colony until 1997 (and indeed, US-China co-production was probably not even _possible _in 1982). It currently lists a first-run release date for a Chinese district, even though the film was not available in Chinese territories until a decade after release. There are probably some films (e.g. documentaries) produced in British Hong Kong, which are banned in China to this day, yet still listed with Chinese territorial production and release.
