Hi all, I've been looking around in the help and through different forum entries for this problem. The only mention I found was in this post.
The problem, as I identify it, is that IMDb is used as absolute reference but they don't use any non-latin alphabet in their entries so all titles are romanized. Some examples of this:
I could put a lot of other examples but I don't think it would make more of a point.
The help page concerning original titles:
Original title vs. translated field?
For english movies, original title should be the english title and the translated title for english should be left blank. For foreign movies like Amélie, the original title should be filled out as "Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain" while the english translated title is "Amélie".
As I understand it, the original title should be the original title.
My suggestion is that original titles are actually written in the original alphabet/language (thinking about Korean, Japanese, Russian, Chinese, Thai, Taiwanese, Vietnamese, etc). The translated title stands as it is and romanized versions of the title should be put in title aliases. I made this entry following that rule.
To make this extremely clear, it should be added to the help page along with some examples and an exception to the IMDb information checking rule.
I'm writing this in the hope of creating a good discussion on the subject and finding a clear decision on the matter. I'm still new on this website so I hope I'm not offending anybdy or raising a question that was already clearly answered. If it is the case, I'm sorry but the change to the help should still be made so the rule is clearly defined.

Hi sberder ,
Yes, I'm inclined to get behind your suggestions around the original title. Specifically, the change around alphabets.
Curious, what do you mean by "and an exception to the IMDb information checking rule"?

I've been replied several times that a given original title in English was not correct because that was not what IMDb listed as original title. I explained why in my first post here. I just suspected that there was an unspoken rule about fact checking against IMDb. Maybe the FAQ needs more clarity and details.
Again I'm quite new here, I try to fit in without stepping on any toes. I'm a big fan of Asian movies and started being serious about Chinese especially (I'm now living in Shanghai) so I edited quite a few movies for more details or titles. I stopped as some original titles were locked and it didn't seem to be possible to go out of the IMDb way. If there is no such rule, I'd like to be able to edit those movies (and all the others cited in http://www.reddit.com/r/China/comments/1jjtbu/what_would_be_your_top_3_chinese_movies/).
Glad it's possible to have a discussion, what is the next step then?
