TMDb has the potential to become a truly great companion/alternative to IMDb and Wikipedia for film enthusiasts. In many ways it already is. What sets it apart from the other two, is its potential as a great archive for film posters. However, the current handling of artwork is confusing and limits the value of the website., as there is no distinction between fan art (made by enthusiastic users of TMDb or found by them on the Internet) and genuine posters.
Having a good central source for film posters is fantastic, but only if genuine film posters are kept apart from fan art and DVD covers.
My dream version of TMDb would have three basic categories for artwork beside the backdrops. 1) Original film posters, 2) Original DVD covers, 3) Fan art.
If these three categories can be set with an additional button, the same way as we currently set language, it would be very easy for anyone to move artwork that has ended up in the wrong category.
If a text field could be added to this artwork section, that would be even better. This would enable additional information, such as country (posters are often very different between countries, even if they share the same language), poster artist, year (posters for a re-release may be very different from the first release posters) and any other information of interest.
Also, the poster section is currently limited to portrait format posters. However, in many countries landscape posters are just as common, and in the United Kingdom, for instance, posters in the "quad" landscape format are often the only available ones. So, if the current proportion limitations could be removed, that would be great. The display width of the posters when they are displayed side by side in the galleries would of course be the same as for the current portrait posters, so landscape posters would simply be displayed as shorter, but when clicked they would expand to their true size.
Just an idea...

Interesting ideas, but I'm not so sure about this. In my opinion the main focus should always be about the movies. There are other sites out there dedicated to posters, even though not all of them are open for everyone.
From a moderation perspective I would not enjoy it if we began to allow more formats of posters. There is enough trouble as it is today to get users to upload decent quality posters. I have to delete promo images and low quality posters that have been up-sized to fit the minimum image size several times per day.
As a side-note, the most popular posters when voted for by the users tend to be fan art made using the original posters (usually with the credits removed). In your vision would it still be voting choosing the display poster or should preference be given to original posters?

I think preference should be given to original posters. I think that most users in the long run are more interested in the real stuff, instead of some made up stuff. For me, removing credits means that it's no longer a poster, as credits is what defines a movie poster.
As for your general comment, I agree that the focus should always be on the films themselves, but as posters are included, there is a need to clarify what is original and correct, versus what is made for fun. Many visitors will not be able to tell the difference. I think a non-commercial archive of good quality, large size posters would be invaluable. Currently, most other sites with posters are commercial sites that sell hard copies, or sites that aren't open for contributors.

Hi Tom,
Thanks for the suggestions.
We will eventually roll out the ability to tag images, there's a ticket for that here.
With regards to the landscape types, it's a fine idea in principal to support them but we would have to create a dedicated area for them and unfortunately I just don't see enough demand for those right now. Put it this way, in 5 years this is the first request.
I'm busy working on some pretty big stuff but when I get back into looking for some smaller feature work the image tagging is something that will get done sooner rather than later.
