William Klein (April 19, 1926 – September 10, 2022) was a photographer and filmmaker noted to for his ironic approach to both media and his extensive use of unusual photographic techniques in the context of photojournalism and fashion photography.

Trained as a painter, Klein studied under Fernand Léger and found early success with exhibitions of his work. However, he soon moved on to photography and achieved widespread fame as a fashion photographer for Vogue and for his photo essays on various cities. Despite having no training as a photographer, Klein won the Prix Nadar in 1957 for New York, a book of photographs taken during a brief return to his hometown in 1954. Klein's work was considered revolutionary for its "ambivalent and ironic approach to the world of fashion", its "uncompromising rejection of the then prevailing rules of photography" and for his extensive use of wide-angle and telephoto lenses, natural lighting and motion blur. Klein tends to be cited in photography books along with Robert Frank as among the fathers of street photography, one of those mixed compliments that classifies a man who is hard to classify. The world of fashion would become the subject for Klein's first feature film, Who Are You, Polly Maggoo?, which, like his other two fiction features, Mr. Freedom and Le Couple Témoin, is a satire.

Klein directed numerous short and feature-length documentaries and produced over 250 television commercials.

Though American by birth, Klein lived and worked in France since his late teens. His work has sometimes been openly critical of American society and foreign policy; the film critic Jonathan Rosenbaum once wrote that Klein's 1968 satire Mr. Freedom was "conceivably the most anti-American movie ever made".

William Klein découvre l’Europe en faisant son service militaire (1948-1951). Il s’inscrit à la Sorbonne puis étudie la peinture avec Fernand Léger. De 1951 à 1954, il découvre la photographie en Italie par le biais de l’architecture avec une première œuvre autour du thème des transpositions murales. En 1954, il rencontre Alexander Liberman, directeur artistique de Vogue, qui lui propose une collaboration. Son premier livre, sous forme de photo-journal, Life is Good and Good For You in New York: Trance Witness Revels, sort en 1956. Il est récompensé par le prix Nadar l’année suivante. Federico Fellini l’invite alors à devenir son assistant.

En 1958-1959, il publie le livre Rome et tourne son premier court-métrage: Broadway by Light. Au début des années 60, William Klein produit des films pour la télévision française comme Aux grands magasins (1963). Entre 1964 et 1966, il publie Moscou et Tokyo, et tourne Cassius le grand et Qui êtes-vous Polly Maggoo?, produits par Robert Delpire.

Du milieu des années 60 jusqu’en 1980, l’artiste s’éloigne de la photographie pour se consacrer à la réalisation de films, parmi lesquels Loin du Vietnam (1967), Mr. Freedom (1969), Muhammad Ali the Greatest (1974) ou encore Le couple témoin (1976). L’année 1980 marque son retour à la photographie, sans que Klein n’abandonne pour autant le cinéma. De 1989 à 1994, il publie Close Up (1989), Torino ‘90 (1990), In & Out of Fashion (1994) ainsi que de nombreuses monographies et de nombreux catalogues.

Le photographe reçoit le Prix International Hasselblad en Suède en 1990 et, l’année suivante, il se voit décerner le rang de Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres.

A l’occasion de son dernier film, Le Messie (1999), il publie William Klein: Films et reçoit le Grand Prix National de France. La même année, il est le lauréat de la Médaille du Millenium en Angleterre. En 2002, PARIS + KLEIN sort. Son auteur gagne le Grand Prix de la Biennale de Moscou de 2004. En 2005, il réalise l’exposition et le livre Romani. Le Centre Pompidou inaugure, en décembre, une importante rétrospective de son œuvre et coédite, avec Marval, un livre de 400 pages, Rétrospective.

Le Grand Prix de l’Institut Américain des Arts lui est attribué en 2007. En 2008, il publie Contacts, un recueil de ses grandes photographies revisitées par des interventions à la peinture sur des contacts agrandis.
