Netflix Lands Rights to Millie Bobby Brown and Legendary’s ‘Enola Holmes’ Film

The streaming site has acquired the global rights, excluding China, to Legendary Entertainment’s “Enola Holmes,” in which Brown plays the younger sister of Sherlock Holmes.

The film tells the story of the younger Holmes, who is a gifted super-sleuth in her own right and often outsmarts her brilliant siblings Sherlock and Mycroft. When their mother mysteriously disappears on Enola’s 16th birthday, she seeks help from her older brothers. However, she takes matters into her own hands and runs away to London to find their mother. Along the way, Enola’s caught in the middle of a conspiracy that could alter the course of political history.

This was a pleasant surprise. I read somewhere that it was going to be released this year around the release of GvK to benefit from the promo that MBB would have done for that. But GvK’s released date was pushed to November. I won't hold my breath. A C19 vaccine ready before November? I’m glad she sold it. With or without C19, it is never certain that you’ll break-even at the BO. With C19 is the uncertainty even bigger. NX is buying all kinds of content to compete with other streaming services. It pays in advance and buys out back end profits too. NX has money to spend.

In my highly biased opinion, one of the most remarkable things about the #EnolaHolmes #movie (this summer on Netflix!) is the casting of Henry Cavill as Sherlock and Sam Claflin as Mycroft. #handsomest Holmes bros ever !!!

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Estate Sues Netflix, Legendary & Others Over ‘Enola Holmes’ Film

The estate of Sherlock Holmes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is suing Netflix, Legendary and the author, writer and director behind the upcoming film Enola Homes over copyright and trademark issues.

In a 19-page complaint filed Wednesday in New Mexico federal court (read it here), the estate claims the “copyright infringement arises from defendants unauthorized copying of original creative expression by [Conan Doyle] in copyrighted Sherlock Holmes stories.”

The suit claims that, despite most of the original pre-1923 Sherlock Holmes tales have been judged to be in the public domain, the author’s last 10 stories about the character — published between 1923 and 1927 — are not. And the Doyle estate is claiming that the Enola Holmes books and movie incorporate something those only later stories included: the famously stoic detective’s emotions.

The suit states that after Conan Doyle lost his eldest son in World War I, the author returned to writing Holmes stories but “it was no longer enough that the Holmes character was the most brilliant rational and analytical mind. Holmes needed to be human. The character needed to develop human connection and empathy.”

Also among the numerous defendants are Enola Holmes Mysteries publisher Penguin Random House, PCMA Management and Productions, EH Productions UK and Enola Holmes director Harry Bradbeer and screenwriter Jack Thorne.

First look: Check out Millie Bobby Brown as Sherlock's teen sister in Netflix's 'Enola Holmes'

Based on Nancy Springer’s book series, “Enola” (arriving on Netflix in September) stars Brown as Sherlock Holmes' rebellious and modern teen sister. The Victorian-era adventure is equal parts rite-of-passage story and period political journey as Enola fights for “her freedom to be a woman in her own right,” says director Harry Bradbeer (“Fleabag,” “Killing Eve”). “Holmes” also features the iconic Sherlock (played by Henry Cavill), whose character arc leans more emotional than crime-solving as the detective is forced to get to know his younger sibling and “learn to care for someone for the first time."

Bradbeer says there's an "important love story" told between Enola and Sherlock, who becomes a bit of a father figure to his sister. Cavill brought “an extraordinary quality of stillness and power” to the role, and Brown formed a sibling bond with the "Superman" actor.

“Obviously, me being me, I annoyed Henry every day,” she says. “I was always telling him about the boys I liked in hair and makeup, and he'd be like, ‘Millie, shut up. I do not want to hear this.’”

Sherlock Holmes History Proves Enola Holmes Lawsuit is Nonsense

Currently, the Conan Doyle estate is suing Netflix in regard to the upcoming Sherlock Holmes spin-off, Enola Holmes. Here’s why their claims are baseless, why the history of Sherlock Holmes pastiches proves them wrong, and why Arthur Conan Doyle would hate what they’re doing in his name.

Back in 2014, authors Leslie Klinger and Laurie R. King fought — and won — a similar battle against the Conan Doyle estate. Back then, the estate was essentially claiming that because there were a few remaining Sherlock Holmes stories not in the public domain, that meant that the character as a whole was still protected by copyright, meaning that anyone who did Sherlock Holmes pastiches had to pay a licensing fee. This was only six years ago, and, in the U.S., the Conan Doyle estate straight-up lost. So, what they’re doing now is a bizarre, hyper-specific modification of their earlier claim. Essentially, they are saying that they grant the character is in the public domain, but if you portray him in a certain way, then you are borrowing “traits” that are protected by copyright because those traits are somehow exclusive to those 10 stories.

Here’s how they put it: “Conan Doyle made the surprising artistic decision to have his most famous character — known around the world as a brain without a heart — develop into a character with heart. Holmes became warmer. He became capable of friendship. He could express emotion. He began to respect women.”

Okay, jurors and judges who are deciding this case, let’s talk about that last claim.

Here’s a quote from “The Man With the Twisted Lip,” circa 1891.

“I have seen too much not to know that the impression of a woman may be more valuable than the conclusion of an analytical reasoner.” — Sherlock Holmes

So basically, in one of the most famous, and earliest, short stories were written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes says the Victorian equivalent of “Believe Women.” Sure, there are plenty of quotes from The Sign of the Four, or more famously, from “A Scandal In Bohemia,” in which Holmes claims sexist viewpoints toward women, but that doesn’t mean some kind of huge paradigm shift occurred post-1920. In fact, the entire premise of “A Scandal In Bohemia” rests on the premise that Holmes respects Irene Adler so much that he refers to her as “The Woman.” It might seem like a backhanded compliment, but any Holmes fan will tell you, Irene Adler is a proto-feminist icon, and Holmes freaking loved and respected the hell out of her. Again that’s 1891, and the first Sherlock Holmes short story ever published.

“The Doyle Estate has a long and complicated history,” Meyer explains. “The estate has become various squabbling heirs — most of them having nothing to do with Doyle and still less interested in Holmes; except as a source of money to spend. They’ve used Holmes rights as a cash cow for their own pleasures.”

So, this latest cash-grab is nothing new. Nancy Springer invented Sherlock’s sister, Enola Holmes, after all. Now,  it’s bad enough that the estate is lying about the nature of the stories, but what’s worse, is that, in doing so, they’re trying to make it seem like the character of Sherlock Holmes spent most of his initial publication history as a one-dimensional and terrible person. Anyone who has read the stories knows this isn’t true.

Henry Cavill’s Curls Are The Real Star In First Footage For Netflix’s Enola Holmes

But with the first footage for their new Millie Bobby Brown film Enola Holmes released this morning, we have perhaps been blessed with the greatest gift we never knew we needed. Brace yourself, as co-star Henry Cavill is sporting curls in the teaser below, and the results are breathtaking:

If you thought seeing Henry Cavill with those curls was awesome enough on its own, then get ready for this: he’s our latest cinematic Sherlock Holmes to grace the screen.

If she’s the one that gave her older on-screen brother hairstyling tips, then those curls are even more proof that Enola Holmes is the hero we need for today.

Of course, we’d previously seen a hint of this new development considering Henry Cavill’s Sherlock, as those first look photos released not too long ago showed us some of the goods. But seeing them in action? It’s the total opposite of the first time we saw Cavill’s mustache digitally erased from Justice League.

More importantly, the first footage for Enola Holmes shows off just how cinematic in scope this movie is actually going to be. Considering that this movie was an acquisition from Warner Bros, made during our current series of events, Netflix subscribers are about to get a pretty lush looking picture.

Henry Cavill Is Simply Too Daddy To Be Sherlock In The Trailer For Netflix’s Enola Holmes

Netflix has unveiled the trailer for Millie Bobby Brown‘s new film, Enola Holmes, and it looks like jolly good fun.

And if that’s not enough for you, it also stars Henry Cavill and Sam Claflin as Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes.

Two points: A) stellar cast and B) Henry Cavill as Sherlock Holmes. Henry Cavill is fine, but whenever I see his name I am violently transported back to his tub scene – you know what I’m talking about – from The Witcher. And then that is all I can think about. Henry Cavill is simply too daddy to be Sherlock Holmes. And that’s that.

Millie Bobby Brown & Henry Cavill Lead All-Star Cast In Enola Holmes Movie Poster

The first poster for Netflix's Enola Holmes focuses on its star-studded cast, including Millie Bobby Brown, Henry Cavill, and Helena Bonham Carter.

The stylish artwork foregrounds the movie's phenomenal cast, placing the focus squarely on Stranger Things star Brown. Cavill gets second billing in terms of poster space, with Claflin claiming a fair amount of space too. The poster also gives a first glimpse of Carter, seemingly in the middle of a fight, and also makes space for supporting characters, played by Adeel Akhtar, Susan Wokoma, and Louis Partridge. You can see the full-size poster below.

Aside from the ensemble cast, the poster makes it clear that the action will take place, for the most part, in London, thanks to the appearance of Big Ben. The lawsuit from Sherlock Holmes creator Arthur Conan Doyle's estate, which was announced in June, hasn't scuppered Netflix's release plans for the movie.

Whatever the result of that legal action, Netflix is clearly proud of the movie it bought from Legendary Pictures. With a string of high-profile action releases in recent months, including Extraction, The Old Guard, and Project Power, Netflix seems to have cornered the summer blockbuster market for 2020, especially when one considers that most theaters worldwide are closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

However, this movie looks to be more than another action movie. Based on the marketing so far, it seems like it'll be a combination of fun action, adventure, and humor. And with the focus placed squarely on the cast in this poster, it's clear that the streaming giant thinks it has a family-friendly hit on its hands. And you wouldn't bet against it, with the likes of Brown, Cavill, and Carter appearing on-screen.

Nerds and Beyond

First Teaser Released For ‘Enola Holmes’ Starring Millie Bobby Brown, Henry Cavill, and More

Coming to Netflix in September is a film not with the famous sleuth in the center of the action, but with a focus on his little sister, Enola.

Brown is not the only superstar appearing in the film. Playing Sherlock Holmes himself is Henry Cavill (star of this year’s Netflix hit The Witcher), his brother Mycroft is played by Sam Claflin (star of Peaky Blinders, The Hunger Games, and more), and their mother is played by none other than Helena Bonham Carter (The Crown, Harry Potter, and many more).

The teaser doesn’t reveal much of the plot itself, but it gives us a glimpse on the pace, humor, and action awaiting fans in the movie. Fans can look forward to a turn-of-the-century setting with a modern twist with an all-star cast, with more teasers and trailers to be revealed soon

Sounds nice, but he shouldn’t do it right now. His curls are already hijacking the headlines – Henry Cavill's Floofy Hair (in Enola Holmes) Comes to Netflix Next Month. The attention and focus should be on Brown, not Cavill.

Some commotion

Women aren’t the only ones giving “bitchy” remarks.

Presumably the mystery revolves around the sudden appearance of Portcullis House in 19th century London, tweeted designer Daniel Benneworth-Gray.

Several articles about a little mistake in the Enola Holmes poster. I, for one, don’t consider it a mistake at all. Enola is a fictional story. All those buildings are Gothic. It would be odd if The Gherkin was in the poster. The Gherkin can’t pass for a 19th century building, but the Portcullis House can. rolling_eyes

This is the second time that I’m anxious to watch something on NX and again I’m not sure which midnight it will be released. Is it the midnight on the 22nd (between 22nd and 23rd) or the midnight on the 23rd (between 23rd and 24th)? Again, I’m freaking out!
