Variety interview

Listen: ‘The Witcher’ Star Henry Cavill Talks Leather Pants, His ‘Hideous Smile’ and All Those Superman Rumors

Do you like being in a grim world like that? I mean, you don’t smile much in the series.

Geralt doesn’t smile much, not in the show. When he does, even in the books, it’s called a “hideous smile.” There is a real grimness to it, but there are moments of light and moments of care and loving and strong familial bonds for people who aren’t actually family. Those moments seem all the brighter for the darkness in the world.

What was it like seeing yourself as Geralt for the first time in full regalia?

Let me tell you this — the whole thing shifted a lot because we had screen tests and the look of the character evolved throughout the first season. We went through a couple of iterations of trousers because they initially had me in leather trousers. I mean, I’m designed in a certain way that things are forced into a stretched position. So, once that happens, the leather just didn’t go back to its natural shape. It ended up being a little bit saggy in places, which was not a great hero, attractive look.

Will you go back to playing Superman again? I googled right before we talked, because I needed the latest rumor. It is just rumor, after rumor, after rumor. What’s the wildest one you’ve heard about you and Superman?

They get wilder and wilder by the day. The amount of speculation, the stuff I read on the Internet, is extraordinary and sometimes frustrating. It’s when you see people stating stuff as fact. Like, “No, that’s not the case. That hasn’t happened, and that conversation isn’t happening.” But the important thing is that people are excited about it, and I think it’s important to be excited about a character like Superman. Superman is a fantastic character. If people are chatting about it, and even if they’re making stuff up, it’s okay, because that means they want to see the character again. And in an ideal world, I would absolutely love to play the character again.

Do you ever leave a comment on a rumor online using an alias?

I’m not going to lie; I’ve been very tempted, but there’s something about that, that feels deeply immoral. When it’s about Superman, and if I’m representing Superman, it just feels like the wrong thing to do. I’m just going to let this all play out. Me saying something isn’t going to make a difference. What does it really matter? One day, people will know the truth, and if they don’t know it now, it’s okay.

Henry Cavill on His Intense Transformation in The Witcher

The actor breaks down the eye damage, multiple wigs, and impromptu mud baths behind TV’s most popular new hero.

You don’t want a pristine Witcher!

The costumers were, towards the end, quite horrified with me. Before takes I would look at myself and say, “We need more dirt on me.” They’d come up to me with this tiny little—it’s like a pair of tights rolled up into a ball, with some dust in, and they’d sort of pat it on me. And I’d say, “Yeah, guys, that’s not enough.” So I’d go stand out in the rain. Sometimes I’d roll around in puddles. I would just try and get as much of the world on me, so this character looked like he had lived within it.

Those contacts can’t have been comfortable.

I didn’t really have a problem with them at the beginning. [But] when we went to the Canary Islands, there was lots of very fine volcanic dust flying about in the air, and my eyes were getting more and more sore. I just thought it was because it was so bright. I would literally have to go hide in the shade before each take, and then force my eyes to stay open for scenes because they were burning. I just thought I needed to toughen up a little bit.

Eventually my eye technician found me huddled in the shade and said, “I’m taking the contacts out.” And I said, “No I can’t look different off-camera or when the other actors are looking at me. It’s going to be more difficult for them. They’re accustomed [to] this look, and it’s all part of the design of the character so they have something to react to.” She said, “I don’t care. I’m taking the contacts out because you’re going to damage your eyes. I’m doing it. Otherwise I’m stopping shooting.” I was like, “Okay, okay, okay.” Took the contacts out. When we went back to Budapest, she took me in to have my eyes checked. It turned out that whatever the dust was, volcanic, it ended up scratching my eye, because it got behind the contacts and was just rubbing there for however long. It took about, I want to say three weeks to heal, and then the contacts were back in.

Given your fondness for the character and your emotional attachment to the role, how did the fandom reaction go over for you?

I am very happy that people liked the character so much. I know that there are mixed opinions out there as well, which I really thrive upon reading as well. For me, it’s vital to go about and read—I’m on all the Reddit forums. I’m reading all the reviews. I’m literally trying to get everyone’s information. Some of it is not useful, and other criticisms are incredibly useful. I take it all in, and I look forward to bringing it even closer and closer to Sapkowski’s writing

I think any of those criticisms, they often lie in things like I was saying—we don’t have the advantage of a long involved conversation or dialogue with Geralt, so they are criticisms which I think I was prepared for. So for me, it’s about seeing that, understanding it, and working out how I can do my job better within the framework provided, [how to] appease and make those people feel comfortable that I do actually understand this character—and love this character just as much as they do.

Don’t do it, HC. Read, don’t chat. You don’t want to be called an old hag, or in the case of a man, old fart. Chat boards are for teenagers and people in their early twenties. Older people are in a different phase of life and should behave accordingly. Engaging in discussions about celebs on chat boards isn’t part of that behavior.

Eventually my eye technician found me huddled in the shade and said, “I’m taking the contacts out.” And I said, “No I can’t look different off-camera or when the other actors are looking at me. Watch Henry Cavill build a PC very seductively

Swoon.

Henry Cavill is the gift that just keeps on giving.

The Witcher season 2 isn't resuming production until next month, so it looks like he's had a bit of free time to build the rig himself—a monumental event that we can now experience for ourselves.

Watching people build PCs usually stresses me out, but not today. In fact, I could watch those gargantuan arms put together a PC to the music of Barry White all day. All week. All year. God, I wish I was a CPU.

It's also very reassuring to see him make mistakes, work into the night and get that blank stare as he reads instruction manuals. None of that witcher training can prepare you for a trial like this. It can be a tricky process, which is why he took a break for a wee while to do some gaming before returning to his rig. Good man.

Let's face it, though, watching Henry Cavill build anything in a tank top, even the crappiest PC in the world, would be a worthwhile way to spend some time.

Right, time to grab a cold shower and then lie down.

Watch Henry Cavill Build a PC While Wearing a Tank Top, Potentially Impregnating Thousands

A fun challenge for you on this otherwise normal Thursday afternoon: Try and make it through this five-minute video of The Witcher star Henry Cavill building a computer from scratch while wearing a tank-top without whispering “oh my goodness gracious” to yourself like a 1950s housewife seeing Elvis Presley for the first time. It sounds easy until the moment you realize the pieces of fresh-cut oak holding the various parts are in reality Henry Cavill’s forearms. You can’t do it. I can’t do it.  It’s a scientific impossibility. Nine months from this video’s post date we’re going to experience a new baby boom and thanks to the magic of the internet all of these children will grow up and know exactly what the f-ck happened.

Check out the video below and thank us later. For more on what our bulging, veiny nerd king is up to these days, here are the first images from Enola Holmes, the Netflix film in which Cavill plays Sherlock Holmes across from Millie Bobby Brown‘s Enola.

EW

We give tanks for this video of Henry Cavill assembling a PC in his favorite blue tank top

It's unjust, perhaps even criminally unjust (there hasn't been a legal precedent in this particular situation that we can think of, so maybe it is illegal), that actor Henry Cavill can look, you know, the way that he does and be able to do things like paint his own miniatures for Warhammer 40K or become an expert in World of Warcraft. It's this mixture of geek and fleek that results in moments that cause utter emotional chaos to stir within his fanbase. Such was the case with a video released on Instagram Thursday.

Cavill's favorite blue tank top reprised its role of hugging the star's pecs while the actor plays on his home computer and, prior to that, making cameos in just about every gym pic. The tank showed up again on Cavill as the Man of Steel himself shared a supercut of his efforts to build his own PC.

The blue tank doesn't emerge until later, around the 3:55 mark as the video cuts to one day later, but it's worth it. That's when Cavill's bicep definition also gets a guest-starring role as the actor lifts his creation in the air.

In his defense, Cavill did warn his Instagram followers of the danger this kind of thirst trap can cause.

Thoughts and prayers to everyone who will watch the inevitable videos of Cavill playing videogames on this PC.

The Babadook wasn’t the only thing giving the old hags something to talk about. They talked about the curtains too. But they don’t want to buy the Babadook. They want to buy the curtains. So this girl saw the talk and decided to investigate. lol

Where to buy Henry Cavill’s Curtains

More than 4 million viewers have seen Cavill’s journey to build a gaming PC and as Cavill sweats and flexes to Barry White songs, there’s just one question on everyone’s mind: where are those curtains from?

As a professional finder of things, I cracked the case when Cavill finally got out of the way and allowed a clear shot of the butterflies and flowers decorating the fabric.

The print is Honeysuckle by Colefax and Fowler and it comes on 100% cotton with an RRP of £74.00 per per metre.

According to Colefax and Porter, “[Honeysuckle] is is an English block print from the 1840s, when a crispness re-appeared in fabric designs. It would have been a very successful design and possibly produced for as many as five decades.”

Colefax and Fowler began in the 1930s when Lady Sybil Colefax started decorating for her wealthy friends including Charlie Chaplin and the Duke of Windsor and Wallis Simpson. By 1938, Colefax had teamed up with interior designer John Beresford Fowler and the pair became synonymous with all things chintz.

If you want to get your hands on the stuff, Colefax and Fowler sell fabrics, wallpaper, and trimmings through selected stockists and interior designers across the UK, including Liberty on Regent Street in London.

Interesting. thinking Besides haters letting everybody know that they know personal things about Cavill, it was also important to create the impression that he’s cheap. He doesn’t even have enough money to decorate properly. That’s how it went from own to rent to house-sitting. Actually, some haters said that Cavill is just crashing on someone’s ugly couch. I’m shocked to read that he has money to rent a house with curtains and everything. When did he earn that kind of cash? I guess that’s another mystery. rofl

HC has to travel for his work and he doesn’t have kids. He could be living like a geek monk or Casanova. Renting a fully furnished house with a flexible cancellation policy would be perfect. Or a lease with an easy way to extend it or to temporarily stop it.

The old hags do that to everybody. Something is wrong with everybody’s house. Recently, FA and BL were the victims. But they’re females. HC’s a guy. Guys only care about the tech in the house. I’ve seen my dad buy painting and that was pretty much it. Have you ever seen guys shopping for curtains, bowls, tablecloth, sheets and stuff? I guess they have to when they live alone. It’s so nice of HC to mention LC, because it seems like women won’t do anything to help other women. At the one hand, you have women who only manage men and create the base to elevate them to star status. On the other hand, you have the old hags who are stupid enough to think that HC dropping LC’s name is the same thing as him dropping TC’s name. Dropping the name of a megastar is good for HC. Dropping the name of a stuntman or stuntwoman could lead to more work for him or her. In this case, LC was the stuntwoman in the fight scene that was praised by everybody… except the haters. But nobody expected a different reaction from haters.

Several people shut them down about the curtains and carpet… and some bowl? So they tried hard to make the Babadook an issue. HC’s cursed. HC’s doing voodoo in the woods…. Now the focus is on the black SM suit and the BTS #1RMW pics.

I can’t believe what I’m about to write, but I agree with the old hags about the black suit. Some fans, including me, think that ZS will use the black suit to match the dark tone of his film and we don’t like that. But HC looks stunning in blue or black.

The whining about the BTS #1RMW pics doesn’t make any sense though. Films (e.g. TW), mag photo shoots (e.g. GQ) and promo campaigns (e.g. HUGO BOSS) release BTS pics or vids too moths later. Nobody says anything. But it’s suddenly a crime now that #1RMW is doing it. They’re desperate to make money. Well, thanks to those idiots, those BTS pics are getting more attention than they otherwise would. Fans just give those pics a thumbs-up. Haters keep posting comments. They keep the #1RMW thread among the active threads and the likes keep growing. Oh, zero thumbs-down.

I don’t agree with that list. Christian Bale had to transform from a skeleton (The Machinist) to a beefcake for his role as BM. That’s the most impressive transformation. He should be #1. Dolph Lundgren should be #2 because he’s just perfect. And where is Chris Hemsworth and Chris Pratt? I think Chris Pratt was fat before GOTG. That’s also an impressive transformation.
