David Johansen is well-known to many as 'Buster Poindexter', thanks to his 1987 hit party song "Hot Hot Hot" having been released while he was using that pseudonym.
"Hot Hot Hot" is one of those thoroughly infectious songs that never get old, it's so upbeat and entertaining. I was in Jamaica while it was out and had so much fun in a club doing a conga line and shimmying under a limbo stick to it; that's something I'll never forget!
Here's the song's music video. Johansen, as Buster Poindexter, was quite the comic showman entertainer, giving a rip-roariously joyful wild and crazy performance. His face and expressions totally remind me of film comedian Joe E. Brown!
Enjoy.

gen says:
wow this is just so great and you can almost picture Jamaica in the moonlight.
dont know if i was ever in a congo line off or on roller skates because if i was then the congo line would have snapped me into the bleachers and knock me out senselessly.
but one thing i never knew his name not Buster Poindexter! What! why then do they label him Buster Poindexter on the videos?

znex, I don't know whether to thank you or curse you? I clicked the link (cool original) but on the side were videos from AB, I disappeared down the AB rabbit hole (you can't just watch one)!

American Bandstand! You're probably too young to remember it.

No I do remember it. It was on from the 50s through the 80s and Dick Clark was called America's oldest living teenager. There was also Dick Clarks Rockin New Year's Eve and his radio show. I also remember Casey Kasem and Soul Train's Don Cornelius. I am too young to remember all the tv dance shows that I know every city in America must have had. Of course I also find him on YouTube. I like the ones where he is just interviewing an act without a performance attached. Can't say that I followed any if it all that much. But it was there.

According to what I've read, David Johansen was already well known (and in some circles was considered whatever extent of famous) from the group The New York Dolls when he assumed the OTT 'Buster Poindexter' identity to record and release "Hot Hot Hot" under the persona of. I think 'Buster' was an alternate personality (character) he had already been using, now and then, in some of his showbiz appearances.
Pearry, the time I mentioned in Jamaica, there were no roller skates involved. I was in my 20s during the '80s, so back then could do a conga line or shimmy under a limbo stick and not feel or look foolish.

brat and znex, I regularly watched American Bandstand for years. It was where I saw many of my fave singers and groups for the first time, who until then I'd ever solely heard the voices of on the radio. Many songs (that wound up becoming hits) were debuted on that show. It definitely was a very influential show during its heyday, and was an essential stop for up-and-coming artists. Once an act performed on AB, they were considered to have "arrived".

Here's a clip of David/Buster on the Johnny Carson show. He discuses the name then goes into a funny story.

That's an interesting interview, znex. Thanks for sharing the link. (I had forgotten that, back then, people on talk shows still smoked cigarettes!)
I never realized his name isn't Buster Poindexter until I created this thread the other day. It took me a while to figure out, as he was on TMDb as David Johansen, with no a.k.a. name(s) added, therefore it wasn't until I looked up "Buster Poindexter" on Wikipedia that I learned he's actually named David Johansen.
Now, on TMDb, he's listed as also David Roger Johansen, David JoHansen, David Jo Hansen, Buster Poindexter, The New York City Dolls, The New York Dolls, and New York Dolls - all which direct to the David Johansen profile page that this thread is attached to.

I hadn't realized his New York Dolls career dated so far back. Back then, he looked quite a lot like Mick Jagger!
