Son physique et son regard facilement froid l'ont conduit à régulièrement interpréter des personnages de nazis, comme dans OSS 117: Le Caire, nid d'espions, Inglourious Basterds ou la série Un village français.

Richard Sammel a étudié la musique et le théâtre à Hildesheim, puis la réalisation à Aix-en-Provence. Il a suivi l'enseignement du mime Isaac Alvarez. Il a été formé au Duse International Studio de Francesca de Sapio à Rome, puis à Paris. Il parle couramment le français, ce qui lui vaut de tourner fréquemment en France, par exemple le méchant de Taxi ou d‘OSS 117: Le Caire, nid d'espions.

Richard Erwin Sammel (*13. Oktober 1960 in Heidelberg) ist ein deutscher Schauspieler, der durch seine vielseitigen Rollen in internationalen Film- und Fernsehproduktionen bekannt wurde.

Sammel studierte Musik und Theater in Hildesheim, anschließend Regie in Aix-en-Provence und Method Acting in Rom. In den 1980er-Jahren trat er zunächst in Frankreich und Deutschland im Theater auf, bevor er sich dem Film zuwandte. Seine erste Hauptrolle erhielt er in Il Piacere delle Carni (1992), nachdem ihn die Schauspielerin Susan Strasberg entdeckt hatte.

In den 1990er-Jahren spielte Sammel in französischen und deutschen Produktionen, darunter Les Misérables (1995), Der Husar auf dem Dach (1995) und Das Leben ist schön (1997). 1998 wurde er einem breiteren Publikum bekannt, als er in Taxi als Anführer einer deutschen Bankräuberbande auftrat.

Nach der Jahrtausendwende konnte Sammel seinen Bekanntheitsgrad mit internationalen Großproduktionen weiter steigern. Er verkörperte den Terroristen Adolph Gettler in Casino Royale (2006) und den deutschen Feldwebel Werner Rachtman in Quentin Tarantinos Inglourious Basterds (2009). Zudem spielte er in 3 Days to Kill (2014) und war von 2014 bis 2017 in der US-Serie The Strain als Thomas Eichhorst zu sehen.

In den letzten Jahren war Sammel in verschiedenen europäischen und internationalen Produktionen aktiv, darunter Der Name der Rose (2019), The Head (2020) und die Star Wars-Serie Andor (2025), in der er Carro Rylanz, den Anführer des Widerstands auf Ghorman, verkörperte.

Seit 2007 lebt Sammel in Berlin. Im Oktober 2024 wurde er Mitglied der Deutschen Filmakademie.
