Sid Ali Fernandel (real name Chabane Haouat), born in March 1923, in Zoudj Ayoun, in the Casbah of Algiers, is an Algerian actor and comedian.

Born into a modest family, this student of Rachid Ksentini was a close friend of Mustapha Skandrani and Blaoui El-Houari. Funny, comical and generous, Sid Ali Fernandel began his adventure in the fourth art in the forties, in the wake of the great master of Algerian theater Mahieddine Bachtarzi. He rubbed shoulders with the greats of the fourth art, such as Rouiched.

He opted for the stage despite his parents' opposition. He left school very early (in the second year of primary school) and joined the scouts. He started at seventeen and would play in many Algiers sketches such as "Le mariage moderne" and "Le mouton à quatre pattes". With great humor, he performed as always, "Yema, Marti Ou Ana" (My mother, my wife and I). He also performed many educational ditties such as "Balak Min At-Trig" (Watch out for the road) and "Talaq Bila Zawadj". During the Algerian War, he joined the maquis (Wilaya IV), in 1956, arrested and interned in a torture center, he managed to escape, playing a guard who takes out the garbage cans. He took refuge with a relative then went to El Jadida in Morocco. He then joined the FLN artistic troupe.

After 1962, he returned to Algiers, lived in Saint-Eugène, 25 rue Carnot. A professional actor at the RTA, paid monthly, he was also one of the main hosts of the Blue Nights of Ramadan, organized at the El-Kettani hall in the late 1960s. This son of Zenqat El-Karma, loved to laugh, eat and fish. He would tour several times with the variety orchestra of Blaoui El-Houari and Fatayet El-Andalous. His last show, before leaving for France in the early 1970s, was held during the Orange Festival in Miliana.

Deeply affected by the illness of his two twin daughters, after brief stays in Algeria, he died in a diabetic coma far from the stage, in Mont Vermeil, on Thursday, October 21, 1977 and was repatriated to his native country to be buried in the El-Kettar cemetery in Algiers.

ولد في عائلة متواضعة، وكان تلميذ رشيد قسنطيني صديقًا مقربًا لمصطفى اسكندراني وبلاوي الهواري. بدأ سيد علي فرناندل، المضحك والكوميدى والكريم، مغامرته في الفن الرابع في الأربعينيات، على خطى أستاذ المسرح الجزائري الكبير محيي الدين بخترزي. وقد التقى بعظماء الفن الرابع كما رسمهم رويشيد.

اختار المجالس رغم معارضة والديه. ترك المدرسة في وقت مبكر جدًا (في السنة الثانية من المدرسة الابتدائية) وانضم إلى الكشافة. بدأ مسيرته في سن السابعة عشرة وشارك في العديد من الاسكتشات الجزائرية مثل "الزواج الحديث" و"الخروف ذو الأربع أرجل". وبروح الدعابة الرائعة، أدى كما هو الحال دائمًا أغنية "Yema، Marti Ou Ana" (أنا وأمي وزوجتي). كما غنى العديد من الأغاني التربوية مثل "بالك من الطريق" و"طلاق بلا زواج". خلال حرب الجزائر، انضم إلى القوات المسلحة (الولاية الرابعة)، وفي عام 1956، تم اعتقاله واحتجازه في مركز للتعذيب، وتمكن من الفرار حيث لعب دور الحارس الذي يقوم بإخراج صناديق القمامة. لجأ إلى أحد أقاربه ثم ذهب إلى الجديدة في المغرب. ثم انضم إلى فرقة جبهة التحرير الوطني الفنية.

بعد عام 1962، عاد إلى الجزائر العاصمة، وعاش في سان أوجين، 25 شارع كارنو. ممثل محترف في هيئة الطرق والمواصلات، يتقاضى أجرًا شهريًا، وكان في نفس الوقت أحد المضيفين الرئيسيين لـ ليالي رمضان الزرقاء، التي أقيمت على قاعة الكتاني في نهاية الستينيات. هذا ابن زنقة الكرمة، أحب وأضحك وآكل وأصطاد. وسيقوم بجولة عدة مرات مع أوركسترا البلوي الهواري وفطايت الأندلس المتنوعة. وكان آخر عرض له، قبل مغادرته إلى فرنسا في أوائل السبعينيات، قد أقيم خلال مهرجان البرتقال في مليانة.

تأثر بشدة بمرض ابنتيه التوأم، وبعد إقامة قصيرة في الجزائر، توفي في غيبوبة سكري بعيدا عن مكان الحادث، في مونت فيرميل، يوم الخميس 21 أكتوبر 1977 وأعيد إلى وطنه ليدفن في مقبرة القطار بالجزائر العاصمة.

Né au sein d’une famille modeste, cet élève de Rachid Ksentini était l’ami intime de Mustapha Skandrani et de Blaoui El-Houari. Drôle, comique et généreux Sid Ali Fernandel a commencé son aventure dans le quatrième art dans les années quarante, dans le sillage du grand maître du théâtre algérien Mahieddine Bachtarzi. Il a côtoyé les grands du quatrième art, comme l’illustre Rouiched.

Il opta pour les planches malgré l’opposition de ses parents. Il quitta très tôt l’école (en deuxième année primaire) et rejoint les scouts. Il débute à dix-sept ans et jouera dans de nombreux sketches algérois tels que «Le mariage moderne» et «Le mouton à quatre pattes». Avec beaucoup d'humour, il interpréta comme toujours, «Yema, Marti Ou Ana» (Ma mère, ma femme et moi). Il interpréta, en outre, de nombreuses chansonnettes à caractère pédagogique comme «Balak Min At-Trig» (Attention à la route) et «Talaq Bila Zawadj». Lors de la guerre d'Algérie, il rejoint le maquis (Wilaya IV), en 1956, arrêté et interné dans un centre de torture, il réussit à s’en évader, en jouant un gardien qui sorte les bidons d’ordures. Il se réfugie chez une parente puis gagne El Jadida au Maroc. Il rejoint ensuite la troupe artistique du FLN.

Après 1962, il rentre à Alger, habite Saint-Eugène, 25 rue Carnot. Comédien professionnel à la RTA, payé au mois, il a été parallèlement l’un des principaux animateurs des Nuits Bleues du Ramadan, organisées à la salle El-Kettani à la fin des années 1960. Ce fils de Zenqat El-Karma, aimait, rire, manger et pêcher. Il fera plusieurs tournées avec l’orchestre de variétés de Blaoui El-Houari et Fatayet El-Andalous. Son dernier spectacle, avant son départ pour la France au début des années 1970, fut tenu lors de la Fête Des Oranges à Miliana.

Très affecté par la maladie de ses deux filles jumelles, après de brefs séjours en Algérie, il meurt dans un coma diabétique loin de la scène, à Mont Vermeil, le jeudi 21 octobre 1977 et fut rapatrié dans son pays natal pour être inhumé au cimetière El-Kettar à Alger.
