Biography

Sylvia Murphy (September 24, 1931 – February 24, 2021) was a celebrated Canadian singer known for her impactful presence on CBC radio and television from 1949 to 1964. Born to Celia and John Murphy, her diverse heritage blended her mother's Belarusian Jewish roots and her father's Irish Catholic background from Liverpool, England. Her career blossomed in nightclubs before she became a prominent radio vocalist on shows like Coca-Cola Refreshment Time and Club O'Connor. Transitioning to television, she shone on programs such as Cross-Canada Hit Parade and as a vocalist for Jack Kane's Orchestra. Sylvia's family included Charles Templeton, with whom she had children—comic-book artist Ty, internet entrepreneur Brad, TV host Deborah, and tax attorney Michael Templeton. She later married William C. Tate. Sadly, she passed away at 89 due to COVID-19 during the Ontario pandemic, leaving behind a legacy of musical brilliance.
