En 1969 il crée avec Odette - elle aussi alpiniste - l'agence Hommes et Montagnes grâce à laquelle il va faire partager à de nombreux amateurs son goût pour le désert : il organise la découverte du Sahara en transposant le modèle des guides de haute montagne au désert saharien. «Sans fausse modestie, aucun Européen n'a réalisé autant de voyages à chameau que j'ai pu le faire dans ma vie», affirme Bernouze (tout le monde l'appelle comme ça, même Odette). «On se sera bien amusés au Sahara,» acquiesce Odette, qui a plusieurs livres-récits à son actif tout comme un incalculable nombre d'heures à dos de camélidés.

Imbattables sur leur connaissance du désert ­ le célèbre spécialiste Théodore Monod les a reçus et leur a offert du thé, ce qui revient à les avoir adoubés ­, ils en sont devenus les meilleurs passeurs.
