Johann Vexo

Biography

Johann Vexo (born 1978) is a French organist. He is the organist for both the choir organ at Notre Dame de Paris (as deputy) and the great organ of Nancy Cathedral (as titular).

Born in Nancy, Johann Vexo first studied organ with Christophe Mantoux, as well as early music and harpsichord at the Conservatory of Strasbourg, where he was awarded Premier Prix in organ. He continued his studies at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique of Paris where his teachers included Michel Bouvard and Olivier Latry for organ, Thierry Escaich and Philippe Lefebvre for improvisation. He earned Premier Prix in both organ and basso continuo and additional prizes in harmony and counterpoint.

At the age of 25, he was appointed Choir Organist of Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris. Soon thereafter he was also appointed Organist of the Cavaillé-Coll great organ of the Cathedral in Nancy. After teaching at the Angers Conservatory for 10 years, he is now Professor of Organ at the Conservatory and at the Superior Music Academy in Strasbourg.

Vexo has performed extensively throughout Europe, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Russia. He has appeared as a featured artist in numerous international music festivals and organ series in cities such as Atlanta, Auckland, Dallas, Düsseldorf, Los Angeles, Melbourne, Montreal, Moscow, New York, Porto, Riga and Vienna. His performances have also included notable venues such as the Basilica of the National Shrine in Washington DC, the Wanamaker Grand Court in Philadelphia, the KKL in Lucerne, the St. Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney and the Yekaterinburg Philharmonic Hall.

He has also performed with various orchestras and musical ensembles. He has been invited to teach organ master classes for the American Guild of Organists and at prestigious institutions including Rice University in Houston, the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, Westminster Choir College in Princeton and Aveiro University (Portugal). He has recorded several CDs on historical French organs, especially one for JAV recordings on the great organ of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Vexo is represented by Phillip Truckenbrod Concert Artists, LLC.

Johann Vexo, né à Nancy en 1978, est un organiste français. Il est titulaire du grand orgue de la cathédrale de Nancy et organiste de chœur de Notre-Dame de Paris.

Johann Vexo a travaillé l’orgue avec Christophe Mantoux, la musique ancienne avec Martin Gester et le clavecin avec Aline Zylberajch au Conservatoire à rayonnement régional de Strasbourg, où il a obtenu notamment le premier prix d’orgue.

Il a poursuivi ses études au Conservatoire national supérieur de musique de Paris auprès de Michel Bouvard et Olivier Latry pour l'orgue, ainsi que Thierry Escaich et Philippe Lefebvre pour l'improvisation. Il a obtenu plusieurs récompenses dont le premier prix d'orgue, le premier prix de basse continue et les prix d'harmonie et de contrepoint.

Nommé à 25 ans organiste de chœur de Notre-Dame de Paris, Johann Vexo est également depuis 2009 titulaire du grand orgue Cavaillé-Coll de la cathédrale de Nancy (à la tribune duquel il côtoie Pierre Cortellezzi jusqu'à sa mort en 2015) ainsi que professeur d'orgue au Conservatoire et à l'Académie supérieure de musique de Strasbourg.

Invité de nombreux festivals internationaux, Johann Vexo donne des concerts en Europe, aux États-Unis, au Canada, en Australie, en Nouvelle-Zélande et en Russie. En soliste ou avec orchestre, il s'est notamment produit à Atlanta, Auckland, Dallas, Düsseldorf, Los Angeles, Melbourne, Montréal, Moscou, New York, Porto, Riga et Vienne, dans des lieux tels que le Wanamaker Grand Court de Philadelphie, la basilique National Shrine de Washington, le KKL de Lucerne, la cathédrale Sainte-Marie de Sydney et la philharmonie de Iekaterinbourg.

Parallèlement, Johann Vexo a été invité à enseigner l'orgue dans le cadre de master classes pour l'American Guild of Organists, ainsi qu'à Rice University (Houston), au Curtis Institute of Music (Philadelphie), à Westminster Choir College (Princeton) ou encore à l'université d'Aveiro (Portugal). Il a réalisé plusieurs enregistrements sur des instruments historiques français, dont un aux grandes orgues de Notre-Dame de Paris.

Johann Vexo est représenté en exclusivité aux États-Unis et au Canada par Phillip Truckenbrod Concert Artists, LLC.
