Discuss Joan Crawford

I think my very favourite Joan Crawford movie is 1947's Humoresque. She's also outstanding in 1932's Grand Hotel (a movie I'm not overall enthusiastic about). 1941's A Woman's Face also is terrific. Ditto 1939's The Women.

I actually like and enjoy Miss Crawford in every/any movie that she's in.

I hadn't seen that in a very long time, so I had forgotten most of it. Watched it last week and was saddened by that ending, still enjoyed it though smile

I'm glad you enjoyed Humoresque, Scorp. I keep wanting to very soon re-watch my DVD of it, yet so far it hasn't quite managed to happen.

What ever happened to Baby Jane.

  • Mildred Pierce
  • Johnny Guitar
  • What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?

I have never seen a Joan Crawford movie I didn't like , I think she was just fascinating (I feel the same about Bette Davis movies too).

My favorite Joan Crawford film is Mildred Pierce. I can't tell you how many times I've seen it (probably 20+). It's in my top 20 favorite all-time films. That character and Joan's performance really resonated with me as she worked her way up from a pie maker/waitress to a successful businesswoman.

Has anyone seen the remake with Kate Winslet and Guy Pearce (HBO)? I couldn't imagine how the story could get any better than the original movie but it was FAB!! Just think of it as a great story but now there are 8 or so hours to tell it (can't remember the length of the second one.)

I will have to check that out.

It has to be MILDRED PIERCE, for me.

The titles that everyone's mentioned are, indeed, great ones.

Some of my other favourite Crawford films, beyond titles mentioned above, are 1931's Possessed and 1932's Rain. Joan also gives a good and delightful performance in 1931's This Modern Age.

Mildred Pierce by quite a long way.

Runners-up would be Baby Jane, Grand Hotel, Johnny Guitar.

Right, Miss Crawford delivers a fine performance wherever she films even if some of her later films come across as rather downbeat.

  • (1932) Grand Hotel as Flämmchen
  • (1932) Rain as Sadie Thompson

  • (1933) Dancing Lady as Janie Barlow

  • (1939) The Women as Crystal Allen

  • (1939) The Ice Follies of 1939 as Mary McKay

  • (1941) When Ladies Meet as Mary 'Minnie' Howard

  • (1942) Reunion in France as Michele de la Becque

  • (1944) Hollywood Canteen as Herself

  • (1945) Mildred Pierce as Mildred Pierce

  • (1947) Daisy Kenyon as Daisy Kenyon

  • (1950) Harriet Craig as Harriet Craig

  • (1954) Johnny Guitar as Vienna

  • (1955) Female on the Beach as Lynn Markham

  • (1955) Queen Bee as Eva Phillips

  • (1956) Autumn Leaves as Millicent Wetherby

  • (1959) The Best of Everything as Amanda Farrow

  • (1962) What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? as Blanche Hudson

  • (1965) I Saw What You Did as Amy Nelson

  • (1975) Brother, Can You Spare a Dime? as (archive footage)

  • (1976) That's Entertainment, Part II as (archive footage)

  • (1996) Joan Crawford: Always the Star as Herself (archive footage)

Dancing Lady seems especially entertaining, not only because of Joan, but also because this features Franchot, Clark, Fred and the Three Stooges.

Johnny Guitar also seem very interesting because you don't always know what Vienna is thinking throughout a great deal of the film, even when she's cracking eggs into the skillet at Johnny's secret hideaway from that annoying Mercedes.

And in some which Joan plays the title character, like Mildred, Daisy or Harriet, Miss Crawford certainly knows how to flesh out those roles so as not to play the same part more than once, just as nobody else could mimic her performance in Johnny Guitar.

Great comments! Meanwhile, that combo of Joan, Tone, Astaire, and The Three Stooges sounds downright bizarre when you see that grouping of names together! grin
