Javier Badillo is a Leo nominated, Venezuelan-Canadian writer, director, and producer. After touring with punk rock bands in Malaysia, Canada and Mexico, and drawing cartoons for various animated TV shows, Javier found a natural fit in independent film. Javier's short films have travelled to festivals as far as China, India, Kenya, and Colombia, and to festivals across Europe and North America, including the Chicago Children’s Film Festival, Cinéfest Sudbury, Flickers' Rhode Island, FilmQuest, and major Latino film festivals from San Diego, Seattle, Toronto, Vancouver, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia, among others.
His first feature film, the war drama ROADS OF ITHRIYAH (2022), received five BC Leo Award nominations including Best Picture, Best Directing, Best Lead Actor, and Best Script, winning a Leo for Best Sound. It was nominated for Best Canadian Film at the Regina International Film Festival in 2023. The film is distributed by Indie Rights in Los Angeles.
Javier will shoot his second feature film in the summer of 2025. The Latinx, punk rock, sci-fi, LGBTQ, action comedy LUPE Q AND THE GALACTIC EARWORMS received financial support from Canadian and European funders and broadcasters, and will be distributed worldwide by FilmOption International in Montreal. Its predecessor, the short film Lupe Q and the Galactic Corn Cake, has been selected in over 100 festivals worldwide, and currently enjoys a permanent exhibition inside Seattle's Museum of Pop Culture (MoPop).
